Girls basketball: Todd Beamer 63, Camas 61

The Papermakers couldn’t hold off Todd Beamer’s comeback effort after leading by nine points with five minutes to play in third-place game of the 4A bi-district tournament at Clover Park.

Camas (16-9) got a defensive stop with 10 seconds to play, but a final 3-point attempt just missed at the buzzer.

“To go toe-to-toe with some of the best teams in state will really help us going into next week,” Camas coach Scott Thompson said. “We would have loved for one more shot to drop tonight, but we will learn from these games.”

Haley Hanson led Camas in scoring with 16 points, and Emma Rehrer had 10 points.

The teams combined to shoot 54 free throws.

Sure, Cassidy Gardner hit five 3-pointers and scored 21 points to lead the Prairie girls to a 64-49 win over Gig Harbor in the third-place game Saturday of the 3A bi-district tournament.

But the senior guard wasn’t the focus of the praise of Prairie coach Hala Corral.

That went to a pair of players who shined brightest without the ball.

“Kendyl Carson and Haley Reed have to be our players of the game,” the coach said. “They drew the tough job of trying to slow down (Gig Harbor standout) Brynna Maxwell. She’s probably one of the best, if not the best player in the state. She’s had a couple of 30 point games and one game of 47 or 48. And it was the job of Kendyl and Haley to harrass her and make her work for every shot. (Maxwell) earned every one of her 20 points today.”

In addition to battling the Tide’s Utah-bound star, Carson added 10 points and Reed pulled down 10 rebounds as the Falcons battled out of an early 8-0 hole.

“That was just a total team win, to the eight players who got into the game to the four players on the bench yelling out defensive assignments,” Hala Corral said. “It was just a great, great team win.”

Alli Corral added six points and six assists.

Seton Catholic boys secure first-ever state berth

KELSO — Down two at halftime on Thursday evening, Seton Catholic captain Isaiah Parker sounded the alarm to his teammates in a series of questions.

“Do you want to go home?” Parker asked, pointing teammates out individually. “Do you want this to be your last game?”

Turns out it was just the siren bells the Cougars needed that night.

And on Saturday evening, with their backs against the wall two days later, they channeled the same message.

Seton Catholic throttled Montesano 74-48 when it matter most: a loser-out, third place game in the 1A district boys tournament.

And by winning on Saturday night at Kelso High School — its fourth game in five days — Seton secured the district’s final 1A state tournament bid, to become the first team in program history to qualify for state, making good on a goal the team set at the beginning of the season.

The win came nine days after losing to the same Montesano team by two in overtime.

The difference?

“Intent happened,” Seton coach Kris Small said. “It became real. The idea that if we didn’t win, their time as Seton basketball (players) would be done. So intent was the real thing that changed.”

The Cougars first felt their backs against the wall at halftime a day earlier. After Parker’s war cry, they went on to score a 28-point first quarter and win the loser-out game by 15.

On Saturday, that energy carried into the opening minutes.

Seton started on a 17-3 run and led by 19 points by the end of the first quarter.

“Wouldn’t it be nice if we just started the right way and put it on a team?” Small said. “That’s kind of the mindset we had. Let’s start strong and finish strong.”

Gabe Anderson, the team’s leading scorer and a transfer from Evergreen, hit three 3-pointers in the quarter and finished with a game-high 23 points. Xavian Rushing scores 14 points and Isaiah Parker and Delano Morgan added 11 apiece.

Montesano was led by Sam Winter’s 18 points. The Bulldogs matched Seton’s scoring through the remainder of the game, but couldn’t get out of the hole produced by the first quarter.

Parker, who led the Cougars in scoring the last two seasons, didn’t take his first shot until over a minute into the second quarter (a made 3-pointer).

That’s no accident. Parker has embraced the role of a distributor this season, which Small lauds as a key cog to the team’s success.

“He knows other guys on the team can make it happen,” Small said. “There’s so many people that can help and he doesn’t have to carry the burden. … he’s just been a great facilitator — score when needed and dish when appropriate.”

With La Center and King’s Way Christian locked into the district’s first two bids, Seton’s result means the 1A Trico League’s top three teams swept the top three bids.

For Seton, which had to take the long way to a state berth, unlike its league foes, the team was determined to complete a goal it set to achieve back in November: become the first school history to reach the dome.

To do that, the Cougars have one more game to win — in next weekend’s regional round of state.

“At the start of the season we said we can do it, we can get to state, and we’ve proven it,” Anderson said.

Camas’ Kim gets his ‘benchmark’ time at 4A state meet

$

FEDERAL WAY — Jaden Kim’s event specialty is the 100 butterfly.

The Camas High junior is a multi-year top-3 state placer in the event, including runner-up finish as a freshman two years ago.

At Saturday’s Class 4A boys state swimming and diving championships, he repeated the third-place feat from 2018, but what’s different this time around is his time: a new personal-best and clearing a long-awaited sub-50-second time he’s aimed for all season. He swam a personal-best 49.59 in the Class 4A final at King County Aquatic Center as one of three swimmers under 50 seconds for an All-American Consideration time.

“It’s a cool benchmark to get past 50 (seconds),” Kim said.

Not too long ago, he said, at this same venue and same event, he swam a 50.03 for his club team.

“I’ve been itching to get under that,” Kim said.

Saturday, he did so in what he described as a solid race start to finish. Hanford’s Skyler Younkin won the event (49.18), Skyview’s Liam Johnson placed sixth (52.07) and was a double top-8 finisher Saturday, also adding in eighth place in the 50 free (21.89).

Camas entered this weekend’s state boys swimming and diving championships as the two-time defending 4A team champion. The Papermakers did not make it a three-peat in the team race, but was highlighted by Kim’s third-place finish, Daniel Peddie’s fifth-place 500 free time (4:46.07) and all three relays placing in the top 8.

Battle Ground’s Alex Curran entered this weekend with the top seed time in the 4A 100 backstroke and Saturday, placed fourth (51.24). Wenatchee’s Connor Elwyn won the event (50.43) as one of two individual titles won by Elwin (100 free).

It’s a big leap in both time and state placing for Curran, a sophomore. Last year as a freshman, Curran placed 25th at state and also shaved off 8 seconds from his state time in 2018.

Union’s Val Tikhomirov placed seventh in the 100 breaststroke (58.84).

King’s Way Christian girls look ahead after loss in district final

KELSO — Randy Graves tried to show perspective. Heads were hung as the King’s Way Christian girls basketball team exited the court following a 48-37 loss to No. 5 ranked Elma in the 1A district title game.

But in the loss, Graves said, exists two overarching positive takeaways. Despite Saturday night’s result at Kelso High School, the Knights are still one of three teams from the district with a state berth, which means the most accomplished season in program history is not done.

“It’s unfortunate we didn’t get the win, but this is the farthest we’ve ever made it,” MacKenzie Ellertson said. “There’s still more games to play. It sucks that we didn’t win, but we’re OK. Next game, looking forward.”

Ellertson scored a team-high 13 points and Hannah Moats added 10 to lead King’s Way. Elma was paced by Jalyn Sackrider’s 14 points. Quin Mikel added 11.

King’s Way played within one point in the first half, but Elma held it to four points in the second quarter and took a 13-point lead into the half.

Putting Saturday’s game in perspective was the easy part of Graves’ postgame speech. Over the last two years, Elma beat the Knights by 55, 30 and early this season by 22. By staying close, the Knights proved they were a different team than even two months ago, he said.

“They knew we were a different team,” Graves said. “We came out and played like that.”

The Knights cut the deficit to single digits in the fourth quarter, but Elma held on. Mikel hit a jumper to go up 43-32 with two minutes left and King’s Way was forced to foul from there on out.

“We got some momentum then they’d go up again, so it was just back and forth. Games are like that sometimes,” Ellertson said.

The loss ends a 13-game win streak that was amassed as the Knights went undefeated (10-0) in 1A Trico League play.

“Time to start a new streak,” Graves said.

Washougal’s Ross swims to runner-up finish at 2A state meet

$

FEDERAL WAY — Washougal’s Isaiah Ross knew he’d have to swim the race of his life to beat No. 1 seed Holdon Ellsworth of Pullman at the 2A state boys swimming and diving championships.

The senior fell just short in a stellar race that saw Ellsworth pull ahead in the final few meters to win the 100-yard butterfly in 49.75 seconds. Ross touched the wall at the King County Aquatic Center in 50.35 — a mere .50 seconds was the difference and a marked improvement over his prelim time of 51.13.

“I kind of wanted to be winning at the 50 and then kind of like see where I could go from there and have good turns and stuff,” Ross said after receiving his red-ribboned medal. “That was my race strategy.”

So how did it turn out?

“It was OK until the end. My turn was a little sloppy,” he said, adding that mistake cost him in the final 50 yards.

It was also his second straight runner-up finish in the butterfly. Emmett Moore of Anacortes won the title last year. While not disappointed in the results, Ross admitted he did want to go a sub-50 second in the event and knows he will have to achieve that mark during club season if he hopes to gain the attention of college coaches.

“I applied for some colleges that I hope I get into,” he said. “I’m a free agent. I would love to swim in college.

Ross, who swims for Mount Hood Aquatics Club, was third in the 200 freestyle in one minute 43.05 seconds, dropping 1.41 from his prelim time on Friday.

In other 2A finals, Columbia River’s Simon Parish placed seventh in the 200 individual medley (2:04.87) and teammate Liam Noftsker was eighth in the 100 freestyle (49.89). River’s 200 free relay place seventh (1:32.46) and the 400 free was eighth (3:30.46).

In the 3A meet, Ilia Zablotoviskii of Evergeen finished fourth in both of his individual events, the 100 butterfly in 51.04 and the 100 backstroke in 51.33.

“I was so tired,” Zablotoviskii said after the butterfly, adding he missed a couple turns that cost him time in a fast final. “I didn’t beat my best times, just missed. So next time.”

Zablotoviskii, a sophomore, placed sixth in the backstroke as a freshman but doesn’t consider himself a strong backstroker. Still, the improvement in placement and his time was good to see.

“I think my best race is the 100 freestyle,” he said.

Mat Classic: Familiar feeling for repeat champs Craig, Snediker

$

TACOMA – Tanner Craig didn’t need to see it. As a previous state champion, he knew it was a winning move.

Danny Snediker had deja vu in the championship match. For a second straight year, he’ll leave with good memories.

Craig, a Camas senior, and Snediker, a Union senior, both ended their high school careers as two-time state wrestling champions Saturday at the Tacoma Dome.

They were among four Clark County boys to win state titles at Mat Classic XXXI. Gideon Malychewski added a second title for Camas shortly after Craig. CJ Hamblin became Seton Catholic’s first wrestling champion.

Of all the trails to the top of the podium, Craig’s was the toughest.

In a stacked 4A 138-pound division, Craig beat a returning state champion in the semifinals winning 5-3 in overtime over Tahoma’s Steele Starren.

In the final, Craig faced a two-time state runner-up in Chiawana’s Robby Vaughn. Trailing 5-3 in the third period, Craig scored four points in the final 15 seconds, combining a reversal and a near-fall.

It was a move Craig credits his coach, Cory Vom Baur, with teaching him.

“I hated that move when I first learned it,” Craig said. “But I got better at it and I saw it there. As soon as I felt it, I knew it was there.”

Without his glasses, Craig wasn’t sure how many points he had scored when an injury stoppage was called with four seconds left.

“I couldn’t see the score or time or anything,” he said. “I had to go ask my coaches what was happening.”

Snediker was in a familiar situation in the 160-pound final against Mead’s Cameron Crawford, the same wrestler he beat for the 152-pound title last year.

Snediker bloodied his opponent in a match stopped often to patch Crawford’s wounds. Snediker won 9-5, controlling the match late.

“I knew I could beat him, but I also knew he had that chip on his shoulder,” Snediker said. “I tried to wrestle my heart out like I do every time,”

Malychewski won with a pin shortly into the third period of the 170-pound title match. Leading 1-0, the junior closed the deal after his opponent, Devin Neal of Curtis, was hobbled with an aggravation of a knee injury.

Malychewski entered the tournament as the top-ranked wrestler at 170 pounds. But he didn’t let that soften his will, collecting two pins and three wins by eight points or more.”

“I wrestled like the underdog,” Malychewski said. “I didn’t let the rankings get to my head.”

Hamblin is only a freshman, but he wrestled like a veteran in a 2-1 win over Brent Hodgson of Deer Park in the 1A 145-pound final.

Hamblin credited his teammates and 12 years of wrestling experience for collecting Seton Catholic’s first wrestling title.

Clark County had five runner-up finishers – Andrew Fritz of Mountain View, Brayden Sofianos of Prairie, Scott Lees of Washougal, Colby Stoller of Camas and Dawson Lieurance of Columbia River.

Mat Classic: Union girls win state team title

TACOMA – The Union girls wrestling team had already wrapped up the state title.

But that didn’t stop two Titans from going out on top.

Krista Warren and Annabelle Helm capped a remarkable weekend for their team with individual titles at Mat Classic XXXI on Saturday in the Tacoma Dome.

Warren won the 140-pound title, beating Haley Michaelson of Bremerton 12-1 in her second consecutive final.

Helm needed overtime, beating Kiley Hubby of Lake Stevens 3-1 with a sudden-victory takedown in the 170 final.

But just was important the those champions were Riley Aamold and Neveah Cassidy. Both were dealt tough losses in the quarterfinals. Both went on to win three more matches to place third, collecting pins and scoring points along the way.

That helped Union build a 16-point lead ahead of the finals, enough to clinch the title. Union finished with 135 points, 21 ahead of second-place White River.

“It’s just amazing because a loss is hard to take, especially at state,” Warren said. “But we’re just so close as a team, we boost each other up.”

Though the team was already celebrating the school’s first wrestling team title, boys or girls, Warren and Helm each capped their senior years with title.

“I knew that if I won too, I would be the best day ever,” Warren said.

Allison Blaine won her second state title. The Hudson’s Bay junior’s nose was bloodied, but that didn’t stop her from beating Viktorya Torres of Granger, also a champ last year, 5-1.

Blaine didn’t mind a tussle in the finals after a similarly physical 3-2 win in the semifinals.

“I really don’t mind it,” she said. “It’s a fight out there. That’s wrestling.”

Blaine dedicated the win to her grandparents, Janet and Ralph Langevin, who have supported in wrestling since she started as a child.

Woodland’s Ashlyn Daugherty capped her high school career with a state title at 105 pounds. She beat Emily Mendez of Othello 6-3.

“I think it will be a story I tell my kids,” Daugherty said. “It will always be with me. I feel very ecstatic about all the hard work I’ve put in and how much my teammates have pushed me.”

Regional state basketball pairing almost set

So, Sunday, Feb. 18 has arrived. That’s the date the WIAA was supposed to announced matchups, sites and times for the regional round of the state basketball tournaments.

But the very wintry February weather the state experienced earlier this month threw a wrench into those plans.

Last week, the WIAA gave districts until Monday to complete their qualifying tournaments. While many districts completed their tournaments by Saturday, several took advantage of that extension.

So we can’t give you definitive matchups according to the state’s RPI rankings, but we can give you a pretty good idea.

As of Saturday night, 12 Clark County basketball teams had clinched state berths. Of the boys teams, there are Union (4A), Battle Ground (4A), Prairie (3A), Columbia River (2A), La Center (1A), King’s Way Christian (1A) and Seton Catholic (1A). Of the girls teams, there are Camas (4A), Prairie (3A), Hudson’s Bay (3A), Washougal (2A) and King’s Way Christian (1A).

A 13th team, the La Center girls, is one of those teams facing a Monday district playoff game. The Wildcats face Montesano at 2 p.m. Monday at King’s Way Christian for District 4’s final berth to the 1A state tournament.

So let’s take a look at who and where those local state-bound teams might be playing next weekend.

These are based on RPI rankings as of 5 p.m. Sunday. A word of caution: Those rankings can still change between now and when the WIAA sets the matchups on Tuesday. I’ll also be updating these potentials throughout the day Monday, along with other statewide matchups, on our high school blog.

Remember the top 8 seeds are assured of advancing to the Tacoma Dome (4A and 3A) and Yakima SunDome (3A and 2A). Seeds 1-4 and 9-12 would play at regional sites close to home. For Clark County teams, that has meant playing at Battle Ground High School in past years.

4A BOYS: Union is currently seeded No. 1, which would mean the Titans would play No. 8 Battle Ground. But the Titans have been wavering between 1 and 2 with Gonzaga Prep. If Union slips to No. 2 again, the Titans would face No. 7 Curtis, while Battle Ground would travel to Spokane to meet G-Prep.

3A BOYS: The red-hot Prairie Falcons are currently seeded No. 7, which would mean traveling east to play No. 2 Mount Spokane. However, top-ranked Eastside Catholic has not yet secured a berth to regional. The Crusaders face Garfield on Monday. If Eastside loses that game, Prairie would move up to No. 6 seed, which would mean traveling to face — wait for it — Kelso! … For the fourth time. The WIAA passed an amendment last spring that kept league rivals from facing each other in the regional round, but that only applies to the elimination games involving teams seeded No. 9 to 16. So it could be Falcons-Hilanders, part IV.

2A BOYS: All 16 spots to state have been claimed (but rankings could still change), and it looks likely that Columbia River will lock in as the No. 2 seed. That means a game close to home against No. 7 Selah in a regional rematch from 2018.

1A BOYS: All 16 spots here have also been claimed. That would leave La Center as the No. 2 seed and a game close to home against No. 7 Deer Park. King’s Way Christian sits as the No. 11 seed and would play close to home against No. 14 Overlake. Seton Catholic is currently the No. 13 seed and would travel to play No. 12 Bellevue Christian.

4A GIRLS: Camas is currently seeded No. 12, which would mean a regional game close to home. But Chiawana (currently in the No. 13 position) faces University (No. 14) in a winner-to-state game Monday. That leaves the Papermakers playing wait-and-see. If Chiawana wins, that win may be enough to push the Riverhawks back over Camas to No. 12, meaning Camas would be headed to the Tri-Cities to face Chiawana. But a University win could mean Camas is close to home against University.

3A GIRLS: Prairie currently sits as the No. 2 seed, which could mean a regional game against No. 7 Bethel — a rematch of the Falcons’ loss in the bi-district semifinals. But Kamiakin, currently at No. 4, has not clinched a state berth yet. If the Braves fail to advance, Prairie could be facing Arlington. Hudson’s Bay currently sits at No. 13, which would mean road trip for the Eagles. But if No. 12 Kennewick fails to advance, Bay could slide up to No. 12 and a game close to home. But, then again, Roosevelt sits at No. 14, and if the Roughriders win on Monday, that could move Roosevelt back over Bay, meaning that’s your regional matchup — Bay vs. Roosevelt in Seattle.

2A GIRLS: The 16 state berths have been secured, so it looks pretty good that Washougal, currently the No. 7 seed, will be heading east to face No. 2 seed East Valley of Spokane.

1A GIRLS: King’s Way Christian is in, and currently in the No. 16 position. That could be where the Knights end up, if Montesano beats La Center on Monday. That would mean King’s Way would be traveling to either Medical Lake or Freeman. If La Center wins, the Wildcats will be the No. 16 seed, and travel to face Medical Lake or Freeman. Then King’s Way would travel to face Freeman or Zillah as the No. 15 seed. Either way, local teams will be heading east this weekend.

Inside game powers Montesano over La Center girls

Monday marked the end of an era for the La Center girls basketball team.

It also might signal the start to another.

In the end, the powerful inside game of Montesano proved too much for the scrappy and youthful Wildcats, who lost to the Bulldogs 63-37 in the third-place game of the 1A district tournament.

Montesano (15-9) advanced to the regional round of the state tournament, while La Center (12-12) saw its second.

It marked the end of a tremendous high school career of the program’s leading scorer Taylor Stephens.

“It’s too bad it had to end like that for Taylor,” La Center Herm VanWeerdhuizen said. “But you’ve got to lose sometime, and I’m proud of how the kids battled.”

La Center was faced with a big challenge in the form of 6-foot-3 junior post Zoe Hutchings, who finished with a game-high 27 points.

“They just ate us up inside,” Van Weerdhuizen said. “Even their No. 2 big girl was bigger than (our biggest player), and Taylor really isn’t an inside player.”

La Center tried to counter the size disadvantage with ball movement and quickness. The Wildcats were able to penetrate for solid shots, but they struggled to finish at the rim.

“At this point, you’ve got to make your shots,” Van Weerdhuizen said. “I don’t know if the pressure got to us or what, but we just didn’t make our shots.”

Montesano took advantage of La Center’s early misses to take a 14-3 lead. But the Wildcats closed within 23-16 by halftime.

Kylee Stephens opened the second half with a 3-pointer, and Taylor Stephens followed with two free throws to close the deficit to 23-21.

But the Bulldogs closed the quarter with a 17-6 run, with Hutchings scoring Monte’s last seven of the quarter.

The junior post added six straight points to open the fourth to put the game out of reach at 46-27.

For Taylor Stephens, her career included Trico League championships in 2016, 2017 and 2018 with berths to state those three years with the previous two ending at the Yakima SunDome. She scored seven points in her finale.

But there is hope in the future. Kylee Stephens, a freshman, led the Wildcats with 12 points.

“Kylee played a great game,” VanWeerdhuizen said. “I think the younger kids got a look at what they need to do. And that’s where we’ll go — back to work to get better.”

Four games set at Battle Ground on Saturday as regional basketball sites are set

There will be a quadruple-header of Clark County basketball Saturday as the regional round games of the high school state tournaments were announced Tuesday.

The action will start with the La Center boys against Deer Park at 10 a.m. in a 1A upper-bracket game, followed by Prairie girls vs. Arlington at noon in a 3A upper-bracket game, Columbia River boys vs. Selah in 2 p.m. in a regional rematch from last year in a 2A upper-bracket game, and it concludes with the King’s Way Christian boys vs. Overlake of Redmond at 4 p.m. in a 1B elimination game.

Regional brackets are divided into two — upper-bracket games in which winners advance to the state quarterfinals and losers go to the round-of-12, both at the final tournament site.

On Friday night, the Union boys will face Battle Ground at 8 p.m. at Mark Morris High School in Longview.

WIAA rules stipulate that a regional team cannot play on its home floor. Battle Ground was the lone Clark County school chosen as a regional site.

The WIAA also passed a rule that would keep league rivals from facing each other in the regional round, but this only applies to 9-16 seed games, as those are elimination games. Union is the No. 1 seed in 4A, facing No. 8 Battle Ground. Both teams are assured of a spot in the Tacoma Dome.

Six other Clark County teams will be hitting the road for regional action this weekend.

The Prairie boys will face Mount Spokane at 6 p.m. Friday at University High School in Spokane in 3A.

The King’s Way Christian girls also play Friday when they face Medical Lake at 6 p.m. at West Valley High in Spokane in a 1A elimination game.

The Camas girls will face Chiawana of Pasco at noon Saturday at Richland High School in a 4A elimination game.

The Washougal girls will face East Valley of Spokane at noon Saturday at University High in Spokane in a 2A upper-bracket game.

The Hudson’s Bay girls will face Roosevelt of Seattle at 4 p.m. Saturday at Garfield High School in Seattle in a 3A elimination game.

The Seton Catholic boys will face Bellevue Christian at noon Saturday at Issaquah High School in a 1A elimination game.

Defending champion Camas gymnastics team use team building exercises as part of state meet preparation

CAMAS — Happen upon the Vancouver Elite Gymnastics Academy on a given weeknight, there’s a chance you’ll find an spacious tumbling room empty if not for the huddle of high school girls stacked high on each other’s shoulders, the bottom row standing on a three foot by four foot piece of loose shag carpet.

You’ll also hear giggles of laughter. Partially from the natural discomfort of the situation, but mainly, the girls are having fun.

“If you don’t work together, somebody is going to fall off the carpet square,” sophomore Shea McGee said, “so you all need to work together to stay on the carpet.”

The spectacle is one of the many team-building exercises Camas gymnastics coach Carol Willson has put in place for her team this season.

As the Papermakers seek a repeat 4A state gymnastics team title on Friday at Sammamish High School in Bellevue — a year after bringing home the first team gymnastics title in Southwest Washington history — Willson’s focus has been on maintaining cohesion among the team.

Willson’s lessons about the importance of teamwork have come in the form of activities throughout the season.

In the carpet activity, a gymnast’s equivalent of a human knot, the girls must rely on each other in order to complete the task.

On the bus ride to the district meet, the team was given a paper clip for each hand and tasked with linking them –red and white — into a necklace, only using one hand and the hand of a teammate. Willson then wore the paper clip necklace throughout the district meet.

An athlete who scores high in a team event gets cotton candy — “because you (gave) padding for the team,” sophomore Alyssa Shibata said. Stick your landing? Gorilla glue or sticky-notes.

The symbolism is not lost on the gymnasts.

“That’s been our biggest (focus),” Willson said, “a lot of team building, bonding, splitting them up, giving them jobs, helping them try to understand that we’re as strong as our weakest link, that they’ve got to do their part.”

The top gymnasts in the area come into high school with junior olympic (or J.O., as it’s referred to) experience — the gymnastics equivalent of club or AAU.

In J.O., gymnasts say there is a premium on individual competition over team. Meets are quieter. There’s less celebrating and cheering teammates on. In high school, not the case.

“You feel more powerful, do bigger skills and do a lot better,” sophomore Lily Ford said. “In J.O it’s really nerve-racking, but with high school with a big team it helps me calm my nerves, ‘OK I can do this, my team is here for me.’ ”

It all factors into to the team’s overarching motto: “out of many, come one.”

Last year, the Papermakers defeated perennial power Woodinville to claim the team title.

This year, they are determined to prove they’re here to stay.

Outside of Jacqueline Purwins, the lone graduate, the Papermakers return every member of its state championship team.

In fact, the Papermakers’ roster nearly doubled — 40 — from last season. Willson credits the increased turnout to last season’s success.

That includes The Columbian’s All-Region gymnast of the year Shea McGee, a sophomore who finished second in the all-around competition last year — just a tenth of a point shy of first — and Shibata, who placed fifth in the all-around.

This year, four Papermakers are poised to make a run at the individual title: McGee, Shibata, sophomore Lili Ford and freshman Peyton Cody.

McGee said though disappointed, she was at least happy the girl who edged her for a state title was a senior. Now, she’s determined to win, and to do so, her focus has been on the little things.

As she of all people knows, every last point counts.

“It’s motivated me a lot to do better than last year,” McGee said. “I’ve been working a lot harder at just fighting for every tenth.”

Banner Year at Bay: Eagles reach state girls basketball for only second time

Aniyah Hampton eyes wandered during P.E. class at the banners that decorate the rafters at Hudson’s Bay — one of Vancouver’s older high schools — and something striking stood out.

She wondered: where are the ones that say “girls basketball”?

Hampton filed the thought away in her head. But this week, it’s particularly prescient. After winning three elimination games in as many days last week to nab the fifth and final bid, the Eagles girls basketball team became only the second girls basketball team in program history reach the state tournament (first since 2007).

And Hampton, a freshman, is their leader on the court, averaging 18 points per game in the regular season (second-highest in Southwest Washington).

The previous trip to the 3A state tournament ended in the quarterfinals at the Tacoma Dome, and was led by eventual BYU guard Jasmine Foreman.

This time? Hampton leads a trio of underclassmen, alongside sophomores Jaydia Martin (13.6 points per game) and Kamelai Powell (11.9) who make the Eagles’ engine go.

Though striking that perhaps the youngest team in Southwest Washington is one of the few remaining approaching the regional round, in which Bay plays Roosevelt at Garfield High School in Seattle on Saturday, it’s not often a topic of conversation among the team.

“Unless it’s brought up,” Powell said.

Eagles coach Michael Rainville pointed out Hampton and Martin are young for their grade, too.

“It’s experience,” Rainville said. “There’s plenty of girls at Bay and other schools that have worse skills than many sixth graders. It’s not your age, it’s your skill level.”

It’s Rainville’s most experienced team in three years at Hudson’s Bay. After more than 20 years coaching at Etna, a school in Northern California with an enrollment of around 250, he brought four sectional championships and a “handful” of league championships to Bay. He inherited a team coming off a winless season, and in his first year, the team won just two games.

“We’re not the same Bay we used to be,” Rainville said. “They’ve come a long way.”

Hampton may not play like most freshmen, but she still had the new student jitters at the start of the school year. That’s when Martin, Powell and sophomore Anastacia Mikaele, who knew Hampton previously from middle school, stepped in as de-facto tour guides.

Each took turns walking Hampton to class, introducing her to teachers and making sure she felt welcome.

“I kind of look at her as a little sister,” Powell said. “It was necessary to make sure she knew where she needed to be and was just familiar and comfortable with things. That was a priority.”

Added Martin: “She’s going to be on the team, we all have to have each other’s backs.”

Martin and Powell knew what kind of basketball player Hampton was, too. And coming off of a freshman season where they went 13-9 and finished third in the 3A GSHL with Powell and Martin carrying a most of the load, they knew how much Hampton would be able to help the team.

The biggest difference, they say, is having a primary ball-handler. Martin slid from an off-ball guard/forward into the point position as a freshman, which left her susceptible to presses and traps. With Hampton, who assumed point guard duties, that became much harder for defenses.

“Add Aniyah in there, who is just superior as a ball-handler, one of the best freshman I’ve ever seen, she sees the court. … Having two of them just makes a huge difference,” Rainville said. “You can’t press them anymore. Teams who have pressed us have not done it very long.”

The Eagles went 8-2, finished second in the 3A GSHL and gave No. 1 Prairie its closest league game. They’ve won eight of their last 10 games — a trend it hopes to carry past the regional round.

After this year, Bay’s nucleus of underclassmen indicates the Eagles may be just getting started.

“I feel like there’s a lot of people waiting on us to lose momentum,” Powell said. “But we’re soaring right now, there’s only one way to go and that’s up. We have doubters and people who don’t believe in us, the don’t see us as a threat and they think we’ll start coasting at some point. I cannot wait to prove all those people wrong.”

Everything is all right for Gordon at state gymnastics

BELLEVUE — Grace Gordon’s smile stretched far and wide as she dismounted from the beam.

Without pause, tears began to flow. After a week where she spent hours focusing on perfecting the routine she struggled with in competition the week before, she’d nailed it on the first try.

“When I did my first back handspring, I knew I was going to be on and I had this moment where I just knew it was all right,” Gordon said. “I was so happy, in the middle of my series I started smiling. And when I stuck it, I was so happy. It was just pure joy.”

Thursday was the triumphant culmination of a long road to recovery for the Columbia River senior, who quit club gymnastics after suffering a broken ankle at districts last year, an injury that required two surgeries and months of physical therapy.

Even though Gordon advanced to Friday’s individual finals in beam, bars and vault and finished 16th in the individual all-around at the 3A/2A/1A state gymnastics championships at Sammamish High School, just being there and competing was the ribbon on top of her high school gymnastics career.

And the beam was her ultimate triumph.

A year ago, she made the trip up to state with the Chieftains and cheered on her team with her ankle ice-wrapped, days removed from the first of two surgeries.

This year, the one-year anniversary of her second surgery, the team was present to cheer on the three Chieftains who qualified for state as individuals.

“Last year I was there supporting them when I couldn’t compete and now they’re supporting us when we can compete,” Gordon said.

Gordon was cleared to return to fully return to the sport right at the beginning of the season, and spent much of the last three months regaining her fitness lost in the recovery process.

Each time she steps onto the mat, she tapes up both ankles and wears supporting braces.

But while at times her repaired ankle feels weaker than before, her mind has felt sharper. Her confidence strengthened. And around midseason, Gordon said, was the first time she felt like she did physically last season.

That came at the prime time for a run to state.

On the beams at districts, Gordon went with the same routine she nailed on the first try Thursday.

But on the first try, she wiped out, only to land a big bruise on her thigh. (“I started rough,” she said.)

“She’s mentally tough,” River coach Alicia Green said. “Between the adrenaline rush, mental angst of falling on the beam, feeling of being in pain from falling on the beam, she’s mentally tough. And that’s what today’s beam was.”

The second time, she didn’t even try the second hand back spring that befell her the first time around. Gordon breathed a sigh of relief when she stuck it the third time around, but vowed to ace the same series on the first try at state.

After she did just that on Friday, the senior immediately turned to River assistant coach Allison Sparrow for a high-five and hug. She made an about-face to Green.

“It was really big to come back a year later and still perform really well and do my best considering all that’s happened in the last year — two surgeries, months of physical therapy — to come back and do almost as well as I did last year,” Gordon said. “Better if you consider the circumstances.”

Gordon will compete in three event finals for the chance to medal at 11 a.m. Friday. The 4A all-around and team finals begin at 2 p.m. Friday.

Gordon was the only individual to advance to Friday’s event finals from Clark County. Ridgefield, the only 3A/2A/1A team to qualify for state from Southwest Washington, placed sixth out of seven teams.
