Girls track and field: Busy schedule suits heptathlete Kate Kadrmas

Kate Kadrmas is accustomed to a busy-bee lifestyle.

She trains year-round in track and field as a heptathlete, and qualified for state in alto saxophone as part of Mountain View High’s band, another school activity she’s heavily invested in.

“That adds to my crazy schedule,” Kadrmas said.

And if all goes according to plan, she’ll make a repeat trip for May’s Class 3A state track and field meet to conclude her high-school career.

Not just in one event, such as placing seventh in the 100 hurdles (15.60 seconds) at last year’s state meet.

But rather, four events.

“That’s the goal,” she said.

Which four still will be determined. It’s the hurdles, though, that drew Kadrmas’ track and field interest early, followed by her first attempt at the heptathlon, a seven-event specialty for women.

She got hooked, and trains year-round with Marinella Jiganie, an ex-high school coach in Clark County now Clark College’s associate head coach.

The heptathlon is what Kadrmas will specialize in college, but she knows she also wouldn’t where she is without her coaches at Mountain view. Last month, she signed with Nebraska, a place she said she felt right at home because of the people, program, facilities and academics.

Luckily for her, the 100 hurdles is one of the seven events heptathletes do over a two-day multi-events competition. She placed seventh in that event at last year’s 3A state meet (15.60 seconds) a year after reaching state for the first time. In 2018, she placed ninth in the 100 hurdles and 16th in the 300 hurdles.

This year, she’s aiming for a sub-15-second time in her favorite of the two hurdle events — the 100 hurdles — coupled with a top-3 state placing.

And she could be well on her way. Last month marked her second indoor track and field season, competing in meets in Seattle and Boise, Idaho. Kadrmas views a shortened indoor season as a way to gauge where she is in training and a way to gear up for her high school season.

So far, so good for what’s ahead, she said.

“I’m pretty excited,” Kadrmas said. “I think this season is going to be good.”

Boys Soccer: Jake Connop, most of defense back from River’s state title team

$

The Columbia River boys soccer team rode its defense to a 2A state title last season. It allowed nine goals all season, capped by an emphatic 2-0 win over Burlington-Edison in the state title game last May.

Three of the four in the back line are returning starters, but perhaps the Chieftains’ most impactful returning player, and one of the top returners across the county, is junior center forward Jake Connop.

But ask Connop, the goal-scorer, the heat-seeker, the bulldog, what he takes pride in from last year’s undefeated season, and none of the aforementioned comes to mind: the number nine.

Nine, as in the number of goals allowed.

“Not 10,” Connop said. “Didn’t get to double-digits. Nine.”

That’s pointed praise coming from one of two All-Region team selections returning this season. And he means it.

Connop believes River, which graduated eight starters (11 total seniors) from last season, brings back the talent to make another run. He certainly feels pressure. The Chieftains have not lost a game since May 16, 2017 — nearly two years ago.

“Now everyone wants to beat us,” Connop said. “Of course we’ve got the biggest target on our back. I think we’ll take that as fuel and work harder. I think we’ll come out in the end with a good record. I’m not really too concerned. I think we have a good team, a strong team.”

That starts in the back line. Jackson Kleier, David Worthen and Alex Ashmore return from last year’s starting defense.

Kleier noted that the target that comes from bringing a 23-0 season into this year is something the team is used to.

“We started going to every game with the mindset that they’re going to be throwing everything they have at us, we’ve got to be ready to counteract that, fight and win every game,” Kleier said.

That’s where having a solid back line comes in handy, he said.

Between the boys and girls programs at River, Afenegus is on a run that features four state title appearances and two wins in a three year span.

That will be tested against a tough league slate that includes Woodland, a team which returns brothers Aidan and Jesse Thrall. Aidan Thrall was an All-Region team selection last season for a Beavers team that lost in the first round of the state tournament after finishing second in the 2A Greater St. Helens League and second at districts.

Afenegus points to the talented defenses, and a team mentality that centers around not letting goals in.

“It’s hard to be consistently good on offense, not hard to be consistently good defensively,” Afenegus said.

But if Connop has anything to say about it, the Chieftains will score more goals this year, too.

Girls golf: Camas senior Emma Cox took college hunt into own hands

If golf has taught Emma Cox anything, it’s self-reliance.

When you’re out on the course and something goes wrong, there’s no one else to blame. And to remedy the situation, you have to take the initiative yourself.

So when a less-than-stellar junior season didn’t produce any offers from college golf coaches, Cox decided to seek out coaches on her own behalf.

“I kind of got discouraged,” the Camas High senior said. “I wasn’t really sure if I was going to play college golf.”

So Cox began looking at Division I college golf programs on the East Coast, and that led her to Towson University in Maryland and coach Lisa Ferrero, a 12-year veteran of the LPGA Tour.

“I found the school online, found the coach and emailed her saying this is who I am and this is what I’ve been doing and if you’re interested, I’d love to talk to you,” Cox said. “Within 30 minutes she responded to me, and within 20 minutes of that, I was on the phone talking to her. We had a really great conversation, and after a lot of calls and emails, I went out and visited the school and I just really fell in love with it.”

Cox committed to Towson last fall, setting her mind at ease and allowing her to focus all her efforts on a bounce-back year with the Papermakers.

Cox has qualified for state in each of her first three years at Camas, helping the Papermakers earn runner-up finishes in the team standings every season.

As a sophomore in 2017, Cox placed tied for third at the Class 4A state tournament and was selected as The Columbian’s All-Region player of the year.

Last year, Cox placed 15th at state.

“Last golf season, I felt like I went backwards in my progress,” Cox said. “So I’ve really been working on maintaining my posture in my golf swing, getting stronger, compressing the ball, and really honing in on my short game skills.”

And working on your golf game over the winter in Southwest Washington can be a challenge. Sometimes, Cox has had to improvise.

“A lot of courses don’t have indoor facilities in Southwest Washington, so I’ve had to create my own space at my home,” Cox said. “I set up a mirror in my room, and I have this space where I do all my drills. I just do that in my room. Sometimes I hit a few (plastic) balls and hope they don’t ricochet around my room. That’s all you can do sometimes when it’s snowing and freezing.”

Cox returns for the Papermakers along with fellow state qualifier Ashley Clark and varsity returnee Wenny Cai. But this year’s squad will be younger.

“I’m really excited about our team,” Cox said. “I really love the girls on this team. We have a lot of sophomores and freshmen who I think are going to be a big focus for the team this year. We have just a handful of seniors returning. It’s not going to be quite the same team as last year, but I’m just really hoping that everyone will have fun and we’ll just try our best, qualify for state and do our best up there.”

Cox said it would be great to cap her high school career by finally getting past Bellarmine Prep at state. But she’s also learned from past experience that there are dangers in putting too much pressure on yourself.

“I’d love to get first this year,” Cox said of the Papermakers. “I’d love to get second. But really I just want the girls to have a really fun time and do our best.”

Girls Tennis: Up-and-coming foursome ready to play

Four friends.

From four different schools.

Each of them young tennis players.

And they all want to win. Just beating each other is part of the fun.

The next generation of high school girls tennis in Clark County is coming on strong, represented by, among others, junior Shreya Batra of Mountain View, sophomore Natalie Dunnam of Camas, sophomore Piper Rylander of Columbia River, and sophomore Emma Tuttle of Prairie.

This group of friends met through tennis by taking lessons or playing on teams. They all burst on to the prep scene as freshmen: Batra qualified for the 3A state tournament and was first-team 3A Greater St. Helens League in singles, Tuttle was also named first-team 3A GSHL in singles, Rylander was runner-up at the 2A district tournament in singles, and Dunnam was a second team 4A GSHL singles player.

Yeah, they each like playing singles.

“Doubles is fun, but singles is just … better, if that makes sense,” Rylander said.

Ask them which one will eventually win a district title, fingers point in all directions.

“I think we will all win a district title,” proclaims Tuttle, who then points to league opponent Batra and says, “Hey, it’s going to be either me or you.”

Rylander said of the four girls, she and Dunnam have probably known each other the longest. They met playing at Vancouver Tennis Center at age 9 or 10.

“We all took lessons together and played team tennis together,” Dunnam said.

Another common thread is VTC head pro Sanja Lemes.

“I think we all bonded through Sanja’s class,” Tuttle said.

Lemes said she created a group just for the four of them after teaching them in a large group setting.

“We bonded right away,” Lemes said. “Their levels are close, but they all have their individual strengths. Emma is the scrambler, fighting for every point. Piper and Shreya are perfectionists, always analyzing their strokes. Natalie is a mix of the perfectionist and the scrambler.”

Yes, they all want to win and if it’s through a friend, well, that’s just tennis.

“I want to beat all of you!” Tuttle says, drawing laughter.

“So do I, but I don’t feel as pressured,” Batra said.

“I played Emma at a tournament recently,” Rylander said. “She beat me, so …”

As Dunnam put it, they know each other’s style of play very well “so we have more fun playing the points.”

But how bad do they want to beat each other?

“Bad,” says Rylander.

“Really bad,” added Tuttle.

“I want to win too,” Dunnam said.

Batra caps it off with: “We are all naturally competitive.”

Storylines

• Many top players from 2018 graduated, however big turnouts for all are programs shows that Clark County will continue to be a force in girls tennis.

• Columbia River senior Faith Grisham is a three-time state qualifier and placed third at 2A state last year, losing only to the eventual four-time state champion.

• Usual suspects at 4A? Union, Camas, Skyview? Camas posted an undefeated season last year and still has a lot of young talent. Union has the lone returning state qualifier from the trio in Nicole Knudtson, a senior who reached the quarterfinals in doubles. Skyview senior Marissa Hunter placed third at district.

• Mountain View sophomore Sheyra Batra is the only returning state qualifier from 3A GSHL. She was runner-up at district, fifth at bi-district, but ran into the eventual four-time state champ in first round of state.

Prep Highlights: Battle Ground baseball takes two against Walla Walla

Solid pitching and timely hitting lifted the Battle Ground baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Walla Walla on Tuesday in Battle Ground.

Tanner McDonald struck out seven over five innings in the first game, which Battle Ground won 3-2. Avery Fetting got the final four outs for the save.

Isaiah Newton and Zach Hauser combined to shut out Walla Walla in the nightcap, 8-0. The Tigers scored eight runs on just six hits, two coming from Cody Niblack.

Daniel Joner went a combined 3 for 6 with two runs and two stolen bases for Battle Ground (3-2).

Stars of the day

• Jake Blair, Camas baseball, went 3 for 3 at bat with two home runs and five total RBI in a 24-3 win over Woodland.

• Wyatt Wooden, Woodland baseball, hit a solo home run in his lone at-bat in a 24-3 loss to Camas.

• Brady Majewski, Prairie baseball, went 3 for 4 with a double, a triple and three runs scored in a 14-11 loss to R.A. Long.

• Micah Foskett, Union baseball, was 3 for 4 with a double and two RBI in the Titans’ 10-0 victory at Estacada (Ore.).

• Olivia Grey, Woodland softball, threw a no-hitter, walked one and struck out 19 in a 4-1 win over Mountain View.

• Kaily Christensen, Woodland softball, went 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBI in the Beavers’ win.

• Grace Twiss, Evergreen girls track and field, won four events — 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles, pole vault and long jump — in the Plainsmen’s 86-43 dual-meet win over Hudson’s Bay.

• Christian Martin, Seton Catholic boys soccer, tallied three goals and one assist in a Trico League win over Castle Rock.

• Emma Cox, Camas girls golf, posted a 2-over-par 38 at Camas Meadows to lead the Papermakers’ 189 team score against Heritage.

• Zach Maier, Skyview boys track and field, swept the 110 and 300 hurdles and also won the javelin in a dual-meet win over Heritage.

• Elin Bertheau and Caroline Johnson, Mountain View tennis, improved to 2-0 in doubles with a 7-5, 6-3 win against Union.

• Lexie Klinkhammer, Heritage girls track and field, won all three jumping events — long jump, triple jump, high jump — in the Timberwolves’ dual meet against Skyview.

• Caleb Sagert, Prairie boys track and field, won the long jump, 300 hurdles and the pole vault — clearing a personal-best 13 feet — in Prairie’s dual-meet win over Fort Vancouver.

Skyview baseball enjoying strong start to season

The Skyview baseball team is excited for league play to begin.

“We’ve been practicing hard, which has helped us compete hard in these early games,” coach Seth Johnson said. “And the transition from practices to games has gone smoothly this spring because the guys have just taken their enthusiasm to another level.”

That enthusiasm was on display Tuesday night at Propstra Stadium, as the Storm got contributions from up and down the lineup en route to an 11-1 non-league win over Ridgefield.

“We’ve been playing really well so far for us,” senior Lowell Dunmire said. “I think the energy has been the biggest factor for us. We’re 5-0 and off to a great start.”

The Storm got a great start from Dunmire, allowing just two hits and one run over five inning of work.

After allowing a solo home run to Brock Harrison followed by a single to Spencer Andersen, Dunmire set down the next 12 in a row. He struck out nine.

“I just went back to throwing strikes and regrouped, plus I knew my defense had me,” Dunmire said.

And the Storm offense also offered support. An RBI single by Ryan Pitts followed by a two-run double by Liam Kerr put Skyview up 3-0 in the first inning.

RBI singles by Cooper Barnum in the second and another by Pitts in fourth padded the Storm’s lead as did Kyle Olson’s two-run triple in the fifth.

Pitts, Kerr and Olson each went 2 for 3 on Tuesday, and Xander Morrison was 2 for 4.

“I think our lineup is solid through and through,” Kerr said. “I think we can compete with any pitcher in the league.”

The Storm will get to test that theory out on Thursday as league play opens in the 4A Greater St. Helens League. Skyview, which has reached the state semifinals each of the past two seasons, plays at Heritage on Thursday before hosting Battle Ground next week.

“Our league gets three spots to the playoffs and I think any team in the league can compete for those spots,” Johnson said. “Every game is a battle in our league, even if it’s a first-place team against a last-place team. That’s all you can ask for in high school baseball.”

Papermakers catch hitting bug in victory over Union

$

CAMAS — Jacob Trupp saw the first pitch come over the top of the center of the plate, took a big cut and missed.

He then turned, looked back toward the Union catcher and said “throw another one.”

Two pitches later, they obliged.

“As soon as it hit my bat I knew,” Trupp said.

In the third at-bat of the game, Trupp sent a moon shot over the center field fence — a three-run home run — and Camas built on that early boost to beat Union 10-4 in a 4A Greater St. Helens League opener at Union High School on Friday.

Trupp finished 1-for-3, Tyler Forner went 2 for 4 with two RBI and Grant Heiser went 3 for 4 for the Papermakers.

Luke Staton went 1 for 3 with a double, Union’s only extra base hit, with three RBI to help the Titans inch back in the fifth inning.

But in the end, Union couldn’t get over Camas’ early start.

After Trupp’s homer, the Papermakers (3-2) piled on in the second inning.

Tyler Forner hit a two-RBI single to center field, then scored two batters later on a wild pitch and Gideon Malychewski scored after tagging up on a double-play that ended the inning with Camas up 7-0.

Players say Trupp’s home run served as a catalyst to the rest of the team.

“Batting’s contagious,” Trupp said. “If one guy starts hitting, everyone feels that energy and starts hitting.

“It’s definitely a big deal to come out hard and crush a ball like that and put them down, put up seven runs in the first (two) innings is definitely a good feeling for us.”

Michael Quintana kept Union scoreless through the first four innings, fanning five batters in the first three, but the Titans found a spark in the fifth.

Payton Jeffries scored Travis Wiese on line drive single to center field, then on the next at-bat, Luke Staton hit a line drive double to center field and scored three runners to bring Union within three runs.

The Papermakers scored three more runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Union (4-2, 0-1) doesn’t feel dissuaded from the result. Coach Ben McGrew saw plenty of positives from his team’s performance. Plus the games that matter, McGrew added, are after spring break anyway.

“At points during the game we were putting good swings on the ball and they were making a few good plays, so it’s just a matter of time where it’s all going to click,” McGrew said. “We just had a few times where we shot ourselves in the foot.”

Camas’ nine hits on Thursday continued a blistering hitting trend it has displayed in the early part of the season.

Sophomore Jake Blair had two home runs in a 24-3 win over Woodland on Tuesday in which the Papermakers had 22 hits, and Forner had two home runs in an 8-7 loss to 3A GSHL favorite Mountain View.

Camas hopes to keep up the hitting in order to compete in what appears to be a tough 4A GSHL.

“We’ve just been really heavy on the bats this year, relying on it almost because we don’t have as many pitchers this year,” Trupp said.

For the Camas players, the matchup with Union went deeper than just two league rivals going to battle. Many of the players play on travel teams together, a competitiveness that flared up in chants from the dugout, extra-boisterous celebrations.

Trupp’s banter before he hit his home run was with a Union player he is friends with.

“Once we finally meet as a high school team it’s really big to see them and compete against him,” Forner said.

Stevenson’s Brandon Connell had a dominating performance in the opening game of the doubleheader Thursday against Irrigon (Ore.).

The senior pitched a perfect game, striking out 18 of the 21 batters he faced in a 5-0 victory.

Alec Van Pelt was 2 for 2 with an RBI for the Bulldogs, while Connor Blair was 3 for 4 with two RBI.

Irrigon won the nightcap 14-1.

• Ryan Cooney struck out 10 and pitched into the seventh inning, lifting Woodland to a 4-2 win over La Center in a non-league game Thursday.

Cooney outdueled Irving Alvarez, who also pitched into the seventh and struck out 10. Cooney allowed five hits and three walks in 6.1 innings, throwing 102 pitches. He also had an RBI double in the top of the fourth to drive in the game’s first run.

Skyview soccer ties River, ending win streak

The Skyview boys soccer team’s difficult non-league schedule had just gotten a lot tougher.

Friday, Skyview played its first match since senior captain and first-team all-league defender Joshua Verrinder suffered a broken foot.

That match just happened to be against a Columbia River team on a 27-match win streak.

But Skyview was up to the challenge, holding on for a 2-2 draw at home. The Storm improved to 5-1-1 with four of those matches against teams that reached the state playoffs last year.

After scoring two first-half goals on counter-attacks, Skyview weathered a barrage of shots from the defending 2A state champions.

Columbia River (4-0-1) scored on penalty kick just before halftime, then tied the match with 15 minutes to play.

And while River had more possession and several scoring chances, Skyview largely weathered the storm.

“It gives us a lot of confidence,” Skyview defender Mac Handley said. “We’re a pretty young team and we held it together.”

Despite their win streak ending, Columbia River players weren’t hanging their heads.

“It was a good learning experience for us,” junior defender Marc Miranda said. “We’ve won a lot of games. For us to get in a situation where we were down will help us in tough games down the road. We kept our composure and had great leadership from older players.”

Verrinder broke his foot Wednesday against Mountain View. He wore a walking boot as he watched his team play its sixth match in 11 days.

“I’m so proud of them,” he said. “Credit to River. They showed a lot of energy. But so did our boys. It was a great game to watch.”

River put Skyview under pressure from the start, creating two good chances in the first 10 minutes.

But Skyview needed a split second to turn the tables. Evan Saftich scored on a low shot inside the right post to finish a counter-attack in the 17th minute.

Fourteen minutes later, Skyview doubled its lead when Jacob Thompson beat River’s goalkeeper during a breakaway.

Columbia River kept its composure. The Chieftains earned a penalty kick when Aaron Espinosa was tripped 15 yards from the goal. Maksim Yurichko converted the penalty on the last kick of the first half.

River kept pressing in the second half, searching for the tying goal. The Chieftains finally got it when Miranda scored from close range as several River players crashed toward the goal after a free kick by Yurichko.

“You’re going to miss shots,” Miranda said. “If you keep shooting, we’re going to get some to go in eventually.”

River had three corner kicks and two close-range shots in the final 10 minutes. But Skyview’s defenders held tight, preserving the draw.

“Working as a unit was the most important thing,” senior midfielder Cole Roddy said. “It started with out keepers talking. They’re a really fast offense and the put us under a lot of pressure. But we had the strength and did great.”

With the league season approaching, both Skyview and River exit Friday’s game with reasons to be hopeful.

The Chieftains now know they can rally when behind, which hasn’t been often since their last loss on May 16, 2017.

Skyview now knows they can compete with the state’s best teams.

“It’s a stepping stone, an important one,” Skyview coach Colleen McKinney said. “It’s overcoming that mental hurdle, not getting down on themselves and seeing it through. That’s an important piece to a successful team. River has got that. And I think our boys proved that tonight.”

Back at her roots at Skyview, Winger ponders her future in track

Kara Winger and I have been traveling parallel courses, sort of.

You know, they’re parallel like a person flying in a plane at 30,000 feet can be parallel to someone staggering along the ground as long as both are headed in the same direction.

This spring marks the 18th anniversary of when Winger first picked up a javelin at the behest of her geometry teacher — who also happened to be a track coach — when Winger (then Kara Patterson) was a freshman at Skyview High School.

That spring of 2001 also marked the start of my tenure at The Columbian.

And over those 18 years, I’ve been privileged to watch many high school athletes from Clark County blossom into state champions then move on to shine as college athletes and beyond.

But being able to watch the path Winger has traveled over the past nearly two decades has been particularly special.

She was an All-American at Purdue University who went on to win eight national championships in the javelin and is a three-time Olympian (Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio de Janeiro 2016).

And it all started that spring 18 years ago when Winger was a swimmer/basketball player looking for a spring activity.

“Try something new,” she said.

It’s the message Winger had for the track and field athletes at Skyview High School when she paid a visit to practice at her alma mater on Friday.

“I love coming back and seeing that the kids today are exactly like the kids were when I was in high school,” Winger said. “It just ran the gamut of talent and experience. You have the jokesters and the kids who take it really seriously … But it’s like I was telling the kids today. Not everyone is going to be the best. But all of you can do your best. And that’s what’s so fun about having so many different levels of talent. Everyone was having a great time just improving on their own experience.”

Friday was the third consecutive spring that Winger has returned to visit a Skyview practice. She said none of the visits to Skyview were planned. They were more informal visits during a quick trips home to see family.

And what high school coach would say no to a three-time Olympian stopping by practice?

Winger had been down in California last week preparing for the 2019 international track and field season, which she plans to kick off in late May with meets in Norway, Germany and Italy.

It all leads up to a later-than-usual conclusion to the track season with the world championships in Doha, Qatar on Sept. 30 to Oct. 6.

“It’s delayed because if it were held in August, it would be really sweltering” in Qatar, Winger said. “It kind throws a wrench into what a normal season would be, but I’m excited for the change. It’s nice to sort of mix it up. I haven’t had the type of results at major championships that I’ve dreamed of, so hopefully the different sequencing of the season will work in my favor.”

Preparing for another season at age 32, Winger finds herself reflecting at her career in track and field.

“I’ve gotten so much out it and I’m just so happy with how my life has gone,” she said. “Like meeting my husband (fellow thrower Russ Winger), being coached by the people I’m being coached by, where I live (Colorado Springs). It’s just like all these things are just so positive, and that’s due to the javelin.

“But it also hurts a little bit. I feel really good physically, but at the end of every season, there’s a different ache and pain. I’m finding that being a 32-year-old javelin thrower is different that being a 29-year-old javelin thrower.”

That’s led Winger to lay out a plan that includes making a run at a fourth Olympic games — the 2020 games in Tokyo — before wrapping up her competitive career after the 2021 world championships in Eugene, Ore.

“That would be my 20th season as a javelin thrower,” she said. “I love that round number. I feel really good physically. It’s just that every athlete would want to have control over the end of their career. … I’m having a blast, but I want for that to have always been the case in my career. And what better way to end a career than to do it on a home soil world championships runway.”

And there’s one more component to Winger’s plan.

“I’d like to invite all of Vancouver Washington to this plan,” she said. “So come on down.”

Guess I’ll have to make plans to stagger my way to Eugene in 2021 to follow Kara’s last flight.
