Local all-star hoops game bring together many friends

The first time Taylor Stephens and Cassidy Gardner met began with a feud as toddlers in daycare, before the two became close friends, and long before their days as local high school basketball standouts.

“I stole her crayons and she punched me,” Gardner said with a coy smirk.

In Sunday’s 24th Les Schwab Roundball Shootout all-star game at King’s Way Christian High School, Gardner brought home MVP honors and a $500 scholarship check to prove it, thriving in a game that highlighted the county’s best seniors — the friendly competition between the two was on full display.

Washougal’s Beyonce Bea and Prairie’s Brooke Walling, both Division I commits and all-state standouts, play AAU together, are friends off the court and guarded each other throughout Sunday’s game.

On the boys side, Skyview’s Alex Schumacher and King’s Way Christian’s Khalfani Cason, former middle school rivals (Thomas Jefferson and Gaiser, respectively), were in the same backcourt. And Houston Combs and Ethan Smith went from sharing a backcourt at Union, to face-guarding each other — Combs with a competitive smile.

The interpersonal ties ran deep between the teams, made up of players stretching to the outer edges of Southwest Washington — Mark Morris to Washougal.

For Gardner, it made for fun competition. She poured 26 points, seven rebounds and five assists onto the girls game, despite her team (Team Jordan) losing 65-50 to Team Moore.

Throughout the game, her and Stephens (11 points), a Central Washington commit, were in each other’s ears.

“Honestly we were talking to each other the whole game.” Gardner said. “Like, ‘stop shooting,’ ‘knock it off’ and ‘pass the ball to someone else.’ ”

For Schumacher, the MVP of the boys’ game who is still , the game served as more of a showcase than a competition.

“Everyone deserved to be here,” Schumacher said. “We did a really good job of sharing the ball. Not just one person trying to do their own thing. We were all just having fun.”

Schumacher added a dunk contest win over Heritage’s Keyler Struthers to cap off his high school career, winning with a two-handed alley-oop windmill. The All-Region guard is undecided on college but has offers from Western Oregon and Saint Martin’s University.

Though many of the seniors are preparing to head off to play college basketball, the game served as an adieu to the sport for players like Camas’ Hannah Booth, who is not playing in college.

That made it even more sweet when she edged Gardner, a Portland State commit and perhaps the area’s most prolific outside shooter, in the girls 3-point contest.

Despite Gardner hitting a contest-high 16 3s in the first round, Booth edged her with 14 3s to Gardner’s 11 in the final.

Booth was left surprise, not just because of the win.

“To be honest it had been a little while since I touched a ball,” Booth said. “But I got warmed up and it felt good.”

To be exact, it had been a month and a day since the Camas girls saw their season end just shy of the 4A state tournament, but Booth picked up right where she left off.

She scored 11 points for Team Moore, as did Stephens and Prairie’s Mallory Williams. Brooke Walling finished with a team-high 15 points. Bea added 11 for Team Jordan.

But it was Gardner who tallied the highest point total out of both games.

Like so many times in a Falcons uniform, including throughout the postseason during the team’s recent 3A state title run, she saw lots of shots fall.

“Especially in the first and fourth quarter,” Gardner said. “It was good. I felt like I could shoot the ball today.”

Christian Swain named Evergreen’s football coach

$

Christian Swain has a proven track record of turning around a high school football program, and views his third head-coaching job much like his first.

When he became head coach of Portland’s Roosevelt High in 2009, the program had a losing streak that dated back years, yet Swain quickly turned the North Portland school into a league champion that went to the Oregon state playoffs six consecutive seasons.

Now, he hopes to do the same — and more — at Evergreen High School, a program that hasn’t won a playoff game since 2007. Swain was officially named the Plainsmen’s head football coach Tuesday, as announced by district athletic director Cale Piland. Swain replaces Terry Hyde, who coached Evergreen the past four seasons.

“It’s going to be a process; it’s not going to happen overnight,” Swain said. “We’ll continue to stress character and the things kids are doing when they’re not on the football field and build on those qualities. My philosophy has always been that when kids are doing those things, it transfers to the field.”

Swain didn’t stay out of coaching long. He resigned from Columbia River in January, going 14-16 in three seasons and leading the Chieftains to the 2A playoffs all three seasons. While Evergreen wasn’t on his radar until recently, Swain said he realized the school is a place he needs — and wants — to be.

“Sometimes,” Swain said, “God opens doors you don’t expect, and I’m so honored to be the next head coach there. Evergreen is a great program that’s rich in tradition and I look forward to to getting to work.”

Evergreen tradition includes winning Clark County’s first large-school state title in 2004. In 2016, the Plainsmen won a 3-way league tiebreaker to reach the Week 10 state preliminary round under Hyde.

Swain said he’ll remain with Vancouver Public Schools as a district-wide student welfare and attendance specialist for the remainder of the school year, before transitioning to student teaching at Evergreen this fall.

And he’s confident the corner will turn for Evergreen football with the right formula.

“And over time,” he said, “things will get a lot better on the scoreboard as well.”

Heritage soccer has fun time in 4A GSHL opening win over Skyview

Coach Bryan Housley called his Heritage boys soccer team “young, but fun.”

Well, the fun really got started Tuesday night at McKenzie Stadium.

The youthful Timberwolves did not get frustrated by first-half near-misses and converted twice in the second half to open 4A Greater St. Helens League play with a 2-0 win over Skyview.

“Coach told us the stats at halftime,” sophomore Daniel Selleshiy said. “We had 11 scoring opportunities. We were happy we got those opportunities. We just had to build off those opportunities in the second half.”

The Timberwolves entered league play with high hopes after winning their previous four to improve to 5-2 entering Tuesday.

“But those were just non-league games,” Housley said. “They don’t have the same distinction as the 4A GSHL with Skyview, Camas and Union. We had to show that we could play with teams like that, and we did.”

The 4A GSHL figures to be a battle every night as four league teams compiling solid records in the early weeks of the season  – Heritage (6-2), Camas (5-1-1), Battle Ground (4-1-2) and Skyview (5-2-1).

Union (2-3-2) found out quickly how tough the 4A GSHL will be this spring in the final game Tuesday at McKenzie Stadium.

Camas junior Dauda Woodruff struck for three goals in the first 20 minutes, leading the Papermakers to a 5-0 win over the Titans.

“We didn’t beat these guys last year, so it feels good,” Woodruff said. “We knew they would play us hard, so we just had to come out strong and keep pressing the ball on them.”

Heritage also had early chances against Skyview, outshooting the Storm 9-4 in the first half. However, the teams went into the intermission scoreless.

“We are a scoring team,” Housley said. “It was just a matter of who was going to step up and put the ball in the net. … I don’t think we ever believed we would not score. We just had to be patient and wait for our opportunities.”

After Skyview nearly got on the scoreboard first when a Storm shot bounced off the crossbar early in the second half, Sellishy took a pass from Brandon Hernandez and slipped a shot past the diving Skyview goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead in the 51st minutes.

“That first goal we got, it was a team effort,” Selleshiy said. “We were building up to that goal. We could have gotten one earlier in the first half, but a goal’s a goal. And then we got another one.”

Skyview worked to tie the score but was turned away by Heritage keeper Kulbir Singh, who recorded six second-half saves.

The Timberwolves sealed the win when Ibra Katchiev took a tapped-in corner kick and curled a shot in to make 2-0 in the 77th minute.

“We knew this week was going to be huge with two tough games before spring break,” Housley said. “I think this win will give us a boost as we face another tough one on Thursday against Camas.”

All new Milton makes noise for Thunder

Trevor Milton has been in Mountain View’s baseball program all four years, but this year unlike any other, he’s a new player.

“It’s a 180,” Thunder coach Aaron Coiteux said. “… He’s proven that hard work and dedication will get you a long ways. Not only in baseball but in life.”

The entire Thunder roster sees a different player, sophomore catcher Riley McCarthy said.

“He set the tone for everybody that this is the year we have a shot to make a run.”

Wednesday, Milton earned his third win allowing three earned runs over 6.1 innings and also went 2 for 3 at the plate in Mountain View’s 6-5 win over Hudson’s Bay at Propstra Stadium to remain unbeaten at 7-0.

The Thunder plated five runs in the fifth inning to take the lead for good and held off the Eagles’ seventh-inning scoring threat with back-to-back strikeouts by reliever Quinn Rooks.

At 3-0 with two shutouts in three starts to begin the 2019 season, Milton’s made quite the change for himself from last season as primarily the Thunder’s in-game live-stats guru with a few innings pitched sprinkled in.

His renewed dedication to pitching — from offseason winter workout commitments to improved eating and sleeping habits — is a big reason he and the Thunder are unbeaten.

Milton can’t help but smile when asked about his early-season success.

“I’ve surprised my family, too,” Milton said. … “But I expected to do well because I prepared myself and I got ready for it.”

McCarthy, Milton’s batterymate Wednesday, said when the senior takes the mound, a certain tone is set that carries into the rest of the Thunder lineup.

The whole team sees a new Milton, McCarthy said.

“He found something this offseason,” said McCarthy, who went 2 for 3 with a run scored and RBI, “and really turned it on. He’s a bulldog.”

Despite allowing three runs in the first inning, Milton and Mountain View (7-0) eventually found a groove. The senior allowed three hits after the fourth inning but Bay (4-4) held a 5-1 lead through four innings. The Eagles Wednesday were led by Peyton Westwick (4 for 4, 2 runs).

In the fifth, Mountain View sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five runs on two hits and took advantage of three walks by Bay pitchers. Garrett Moen’s RBI single gave the Thunder the lead for good.

Milton struck out three and walked one Wednesday on 104 pitches. His starts have been pleasant surprise for Coiteux, but not completely unexpected. After all, the coach knew what Milton could produce, but it was a matter of finding it.

And as important as Milton’s physical transformation is, the growth in confidence is just as big, he said.

“I’m still the same skinny kid,” he said, “but just working out made my mind stronger than I could ever imagine.”

Jacob Trupp hit a grand slam and Riley Sinclair threw 4.1 innings of shutout ball as the Camas baseball team beat Skyview 4-2 on Thursday.

After Skyview took a 2-0 after two innings, singles by Riley Buehler and Tyler Former, plus a hit-by-pitch by Grant Heiser loaded the bases with two outs before Trupp sent the ball over the left-field fence for a 4-2 lead.

Sinclair entered the game in the top of the third and held the Storm to a single hit the rest of the way, striking out six.

Woodland names Washougal assistant as new boys basketball coach

Jesse Buck, an assistant boys basketball coach at Washougal, is Woodland’s new boys basketball coach, athletic director Paul Huddleston announced Friday.

Buck spent the past three years in the Panthers’ program, including its junior-varsity coach last year. He replaces Andrew Johnson, who coached the Beavers the past three seasons.

Huddleston praised Buck’s enthusiasm for more than just basketball.

“He’s one of those guys whose not only passionate about basketball,” Huddleston said, “but about developing character in kids. “… Everyone I’ve talked to, it’s a common theme everywhere that he’s a really good person with a big heart for kids.”

Buck teaches physical education at South Ridge Elementary School in Ridgefield.

Columbia River baseball rolling into spring break

The Columbia River baseball team won’t need a spring break trip to Arizona for its bats to warm up.

The Chieftains are already hitting at a hot clip.

Columbia River had 11 hits Friday in a 12-5 win over Hockinson. In three 2A Greater St. Helens League games, the Chieftains have scored 29 runs on 30 hits.

At 5-1 overall and 3-0 in league play, the Chieftains are ready to take a swing down south.

Up next is a five-day trip to Arizona, where the team will play four games at a tournament in the Phoenix area. The Chieftains also plan on taking in an Arizona Diamondbacks game.

It figures to be five days in baseball paradise.

“It really gets us to be able to focus not only on the games that are happening, but each other as teammates and friends,” senior outfielder Parker McNeil said. “We’re all going to be living together for the next five days and playing baseball constantly. I feel like that’s huge for us. It’s going to build our confidence going into the back half of the season.”

There’s another reason Columbia River is running hot, and it has nothing to do with the weather.

Last season, the Chieftains missed the state playoffs for the first time in six years. Eleven seniors on this year’s team have chips on their shoulders, determined not to let that happen again.

“I feel like last year we kind of disappointed ourselves with how we were playing and how our season ended,” McNeil said. “We’re definitely trying to improve on that and go a lot farther than we have before.”

Friday, Columbia River got its leadoff hitters on in five of six innings.

That put Hockinson’s pitchers and defense in constant high-pressure situations. Only four batters struck out as the Chieftains put the ball in play 27 times and drew six walks.

“That’s the key for us,” River coach Stephen Donohue said. “If we can get leadoff guys on, we can bunt and do some of the things we like to do.” “If we get a runner on, there’s a pretty good chance of them scoring,” senior Derek Mettler said.

Even after Hockinson took a 4-0 lead in the top of the second, it wasn’t long before Columbia River turned the tables.

River scored four runs in the bottom of the third to take a 6-4 lead. Freshman Sam Boyle got the inning rolling with an RBI double. Sophomore Nick Alder followed with a two-RBI single.

Seven of nine hitters in River’s lineup had base hits Friday. Alder went 3 for 3 while McNeil and Sawyer Parkin each had two hits.

Now, the Chieftains are looking forward to a week of sun, fun and baseball.

Asked what he’s looking forward to most, Mettler let the trip’s itinerary do the talking.

“I don’t know, what can I say,” he said. “I guess, everything.”

Prep highlights: Walk-off home run by Remenar lifts Hockinson softball to victory

Jenna Remenar’s walk-off solo home run to left field gave Hockinson to a 2-1 extra-inning victory over Battle Ground in Friday’s nonleague softball game.

Battle Ground led 1-0 in the fourth inning on Grace Stillman’s RBI hit, and Hockinson tied it 1-1 in the seventh when Darby Peters’ RBI single scored Ellie Skinner.

Remenar’s home run lead off the eighth inning.

Remenar and Ashley King each went 2 for 4 to account for a combined four of the Hawks’ seven hits.

Pitcher Abby Runyon earned the win, striking out 12 batters over eight innings.

Stars of the day

• Katie Steward, La Center softball, went 4 for 5 with a grand slam and 7 RBI in a Trico League win over Stevenson.

• Mickey Woodward, Woodland baseball, allowed four hits and struck out two over five innings to earn the win in the Beavers’ 5-1 victory over Mark Morris.

• Brandon Connell, Stevenson baseball, allowed one hit and struck out nine in a 4-0 shutout of La Center.

• Jimmy Wallace, Ridgefield baseball, went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI and also struck out four in two relief innings in a 11-2 nonleague win over King’s Way Christian.

• Karli Oliver, Ridgefield softball, went 2 for 3 with a triple and three RBI in a 13-0 win over South Medford, Ore.

Football finals need to be showcase event when picking venue

There was a suggestion broached last week that piqued my interest — a state championship football game held in Vancouver.

Ever since 1995, the high school football season in Washington ended with championship games in the Tacoma Dome.

But last week, Mike Colbrese, the retiring executive director of the WIAA, said that streak could end next fall, the Kitsap Sun reported.

“Our contract is up with the dome,” Colbrese told a group in Bremerton. “I’m not so sure we’ll renew it.”

The issue is cost. The price tag for renting the Tacoma Dome to host those six state championships over two days is almost $70,000.

In 2016, the WIAA cut its bottom line by moving semifinal football games to outdoor venues. Colbrese wondered if it didn’t make sense — from a fiscal standpoint — to do the same for the championship games.

He mentioned Pop Keeney Stadium in Bothell, Sparks Stadium in Puyallup and McKenzie Stadium in Vancouver as potential outdoor venues.

McKenzie Stadium hosted semifinal doubleheaders in 2016 and last fall. Both events were considered big successes, drawing near-capacity crowds to McKenzie.

Now Colbrese is suggesting the WIAA continue that success into championship weekend, and save some money to boot.

He said one outdoor venue wouldn’t host all six state title games. They would be divided among two or three sites.

For example, had this outdoor plan had been in place last season, you might have seen the 4A (Union vs. Lake Stevens) and 3A (Eastside Catholic vs. O’Dea) title games at Pop Keeney Stadium, the 2A (Hockinson vs. Lynden) and 2B (Kalama vs. Napavine) games at McKenzie Stadium and the 1A (Colville vs. Newport) and 1B (Odessa vs. Almira-Coulee-Hartline) at a site in Spokane or some other eastside location.

Clark County has only had a taste of hosting state championship sporting events over the past two decades.

Doc Harris Stadium in Camas hosted state soccer finals more than a decade ago. Vancouver Tennis Center hosted a couple of state tennis tournaments. And Southwest Washington golf courses hosted state tournaments in 2013 and 2014.

Getting to host state title football games would be huge event for Clark County.

But if the WIAA actually goes through with a plan to take the Gridiron Classic out of the Tacoma Dome and move those games to places like Pop Keeney, Sparks or McKenzie, it should be prepared for a significant level of blowback from players, coaches, schools and fans.

First of all, the Tacoma Dome has tradition on its side, with nearly 25-year history of hosting state title football games.

And even though the Tacoma Dome has its faults — a new seating configuration last fall left some fans with restricted viewing of the playing field — the Dome remains a destination location for high school teams that places like Pop Keeney, Sparks or McKenzie can’t match.

So moving the title games out of the Tacoma Dome to an outside location requires the game being moved to an outdoor site that is a destination. And there are few options in western Washington that qualify — CenturyLink Field or Husky Stadium are two that come to mind.

But the rental cost of those facilities likely would exceed the price tag at the Tacoma Dome — unless the WIAA comes to some kind of agreement in which those facilities would open its doors to high school teams at a reduced price.

Such an agreement is not without precedent. Safeco Field has hosted baseball state title games.

(Yeah, that’s right, I said Safeco Field. That’s because when baseball title games were played there, it was still called Safeco Field. Now it’s T-Mobile Park.)

And before you start thinking of T-Mobile being a potential host site for football, last year the facility hosted a Christmas Light display event for the entire month of December. (Hey, don’t knock the Christmas Lights event. I took my son to it last year, and it’s pretty cool).

Husky Stadium did host the Emerald City Kickoff, an opening-week prep football showcase, in past seasons. So there is a relationship between the WIAA and Husky Stadium.

Perhaps that relationship can be renewed. The college football regular season ends in November, so Husky Stadium figures to be available the first weekend in December.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. This is not a done deal. The WIAA is still in negotiations with the Tacoma Dome. A final decision won’t be made until June.

It would not surprise me in the least to see the Gridiron Classic back at the Tacoma Dome in December.

Because moving the event out of the dome might make fiscal sense, but if moving it means ending up at sites like McKenzie Stadium — no matter how cool it would be for Clark County fans — that would fall far short of the showcase event to which players, schools and fans in the state have grown accustomed.
