This weather has bogged down spring sports everywhere

Alright, enough already with the rain.

That’s the sentiment of high school athletes and coaches from around Clark County, if not the entire state.

Wetter-than-normal spring weather greeted teams coming out of spring break, and athletes are ready for some sunshine.

The Battle Ground softball team had its game with Union rained out on Monday, but the two teams were able to squeeze the game in Tuesday in less-than-ideal conditions.

“I got lucky,” Battle Ground senior Brianna Adams said after Tuesday’s game. “I didn’t have to slide today.”

A Battle Ground junior varsity player wasn’t so lucky. Her headfirst slide into home was more like a faceplant in the mud.

Her slide covered home plate in muck. The umpire tried to sweep the plate clean, without a lot of luck. He needed a power washer.

“I was glad we were able to get this game in,” Battle Ground softball coach Arielle Wiser said. “Your first concern is to make sure it’s safe to play. And if it is, you try to play because you don’t want to be in a situation where you’re playing day after day after day. Then you don’t have time to practice things you need to work on.”

Hopefully, the Columbia River baseball team doesn’t have much to work on, because that’s exactly the situation the Chieftains find themselves in this week.

The rain postponements lined up last week for River. Then on Friday, the only really good day for baseball, the Chieftains had a bye in the 2A Greater St. Helens League schedule.

The result is a very busy week for River. The Chieftains play on the road at Mark Morris (Monday), Ridgefield (Tuesday), Woodland (Wednesday) and R.A. Long (Thursday) before hosting Washougal on Friday.

Golf is a spring sport that typically isn’t subject to postponements. But the Camas girls team has only been able to get out onto its home course, Camas Meadows, four times this spring.

“It’s just been so muddy,” senior Ashley Clark said.

The Papermakers have tried to hit the road to find better playing conditions, and not always with any luck.

“We were scheduled to go play a tournament in Yakima last month at Apple Valley,” Camas coach Bob Foster said. “We went last year, and it was a great experience. But this year, they had to cancel because they had snow on the ground so late the course wasn’t ready for play. And that was March 28.”

The Papermakers went to Pasco last Tuesday and were greeted with rain showers and high winds.

But as Foster pointed out, it could be worse.

“I was talking to a coach from Mount Spokane when we were in Pasco,” Foster said. “He said this was the first week that they’ve been able to get out and play all season.”

So, when it comes to spring sports, rain is bad, but snow is worse.

There is light at the end of this soggy tunnel.

According to weather.com, Monday will have showers and a high in the low 50s. But then things dry out a little on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday, the high is projected to be 75.

That will be music to ears like Camas golfer Emma Cox.

“I’m tired of my feet being soggy,” she said.

Skyview pitcher Dunmire’s recovery is right on target

Lowell Dunmire’s fastballs have a bit more pop in the catcher’s glove these days.

Though the Skyview High senior constantly hears those pops, he never heard one in his pitching arm before ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) reconstructive surgery at 16, commonly known as Tommy John elbow surgery.

Memories of pain and discomfort, and a 12-month recovery give way to a starting pitcher whose thrown 70 percent of pitches for strikes with a better command of the strike zone, his head coach said.

Coaches and teammates see Dunmire — a 6-foot-5 left-hander in the Storm’s starting rotation — as the pitcher they all knew he could be who has exceeded expectations two years removed from a dreaded surgery that’s becoming an epidemic in baseball.

“On and on,” teammate Ryan Pitts said, “he’s been really dominant and a completely different player.”

The numbers back that up. Dunmire is 4-0 with one earned run allowed in 17 innings and has a 8.67 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He plays first base when he doesn’t pitch.

The risk the 18-year-old Dunmire was initially hesitant to take more than two years ago turned out to be one he doesn’t regret. It has transformed him into a new pitcher and a new-look competitor.

“The biggest thing that’s changed from before is to enjoy it, and to be more excited, and to get hyped up before you go out there,” he said. “I’ve learned to take advantage of every opportunity on the mound.”

Dunmire is part of an alarming statistic and a growing trend in baseball. A study by the American Orthopedic Society of Sports Medicine revealed 57 Tommy John surgeries — named after the first major league pitcher to undergo UCL reconstruction in 1974 — over a recent four-year period were performed on teens ages 15 to 19.

Dunmire falls into that category, but is still puzzled when and why the injury occurred. Always a multi-sport athlete priding on arm care, he learned during basketball season sophomore year of the fully torn UCL in the pitching arm.

The news came as a shock to this day, Dunmire can’t pinpoint times of overuse, or a specific pitch or game the left arm gave way to pain; rather, a gradual injury that began freshman year and continued for months without improvement.

“We’ve still tried to figure out why it happened,” he said.

Dunmire admits he wasn’t much of a risk taker until agreeing to have the reconstructive surgery in February 2017. Persuasion by his father, David, helped the younger Dunmire see the benefits while knowing the risk factors involved.

“The fact I’d miss an entire season, or have the surgery go wrong, I didn’t want to risk it,” Dunmire said. But I realized how much I liked (baseball) and put into it, I’d be letting myself down if I didn’t take a shot.

“I can’t imagine if I didn’t go through it now.”

Surgery shelved Dunmire for 12 months. Recovery included lengthy rehabilitation and strict throwing schedules to build back arm strength and control. That spring, Dunmire was a team manager for the Skyview team that reached the Class 4A state semifinals. That 2017 season is same year the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association responded to new national high school regulations on pitch-count limits, limiting pitchers to no more than 105 pitches in a day. Previously, innings thrown is what determined pitchers’ rest time.

Skyview head coach Seth Johnson follows USA Baseball guidelines and its Pitch Smart Program to help avoid overuse injuries for all Storm pitchers.

While Dunmire is the first to have the surgery in Johnson’s tenure at Skyview, the coach dealt with a similar scenario as a Lower Columbia College assistant coach. Right-hander Levi Dean from Chehalis missed the first half of 2008 recovering from Tommy John, and Johnson took a page out of Dean’s time at LCC to formulate a back-to-pitching plan for Dunmire in 2018. It included three starts between varsity and sub-varsity and a strict pitch-count limit each outing.

Not wanting to rush, the coach looked at Dunmire’s future rather than the present.

“I was more concerned about his health than if he was going to throw and help us win a games,” Johnson said. “It was more important for him to get right and be healthy at (age) 21-22 and show off at that age.”

And what Johnson has seen is a player who has exceeded the coach’s expectations as a pitcher and hitter this spring. In last week’s 7-1 win over Union, Dunmire drove in five runs in a 3-for-3 day at the plate. He’s also allowed just six hits in four starts entering the Storm’s (11-2) 4A Greater St. Helens League contest at Battle Ground on Thursday.

“His fastball is as good as I’ve ever seen him with,” Johnson said.

In showcase tournaments last summer, Dunmire said his fastball was clocked in the mid-80s. Not long after, colleges came calling. He signed with LCC, cementing what he labels a positive two-year ordeal with a rewarding takeaway.

“Baseball can always teach you a lot about life, and how to overcome obstacles,” Dunmire said. “If you keep playing long enough and hard enough, things will work out in the end.

“It’s one of those things you feel the most pain you’ve ever felt on the field, but it can be the most happy and excited you’ve ever been.

“I’ve gotten that spirit and fire back, but I’m not done.”

Bottom of the order delivers as Ridgefield beats Columbia River in baseball

$

RIDGEFIELD — The Ridgefield baseball team was looking for a spark with the bats Tuesday, and the Spudders got it from the bottom of the lineup.

Camden Ryder’s two-run double in the bottom of the sixth keyed a three-run inning that pushed the Spudders past Columbia River 3-1 in a key 2A Greater St. Helens League game.

“We’ve been waiting for that clutch hit all year,” Ridgefield coach Nick Allen said. “It feels like the guys have been trying to do too much. They just need to relax, let the game come to them. And sometimes you just need the ball to bounce your way.”

After being shut out by Columbia River’s Nick Alder through five innings, the Spudders got their rally started with a leadoff double by Clay Madsen. Bryce Fry, trying to lay down a sacrifice, got hit by a pitch before Tyler Lehnertz got a sacrifice down to put runners on second and third.

Then Ryder turned on a fastball and hit a chopper that bounced over the third-base bag for a two-run double.

“(Alder) has been hitting the strike zone with the first pitch all night,” Ryder said. “I was looking for a fastball somewhere over the plate. Got it, went for it, and it ended up going well.”

Three batters later, Spencer Andersen added an RBI single to make it 3-1.

“That at-bat by Spencer, that was a senior at-bat,” Allen said. “He got down 0-2, worked the count, then hit a laser.”

Josh Mansur did the job on the mound for Ridgefield, holding Columbia River to a run on six hits while striking out 10.

“Josh had great composure on the mound, not letting anything get to him,” Ryder said. “He really kept us in the game. There were guys on third base multiple times, and I think his damage control was really clutch tonight.”

In the fourth inning, River got the game’s first run when after a hit and an error put runners on first and third, Andrew Wisch beat out an infield chopper to plate River’s first run.

Mansur helped make sure it was the Chieftains’ only run by a bunt attempt and starting a double play.

Coming off a 2-1 loss last Friday to Hockinson, the Spudders were at risk of falling two games behind River in the competitive 2A GSHL.

Instead, the Spudders are tied for first with R.A. Long at 4-1, with River a half-game back at 3-1.

Allen said Ridgefield learned the hard way last Friday that they need to come ready to play in every league game.

Ryder added Tuesday’s comeback could help springboard the Spudders forward.

“Sometimes you’ve got to win close games,” he said. “Sometimes when there is only one run or two runs. You’ve got to be able to compete for all seven innings. You’ve got to play all the way through, and that’s what we did tonight.”

So while the Tigers’ 7-3 win on Tuesday at VGSA does plenty to put Battle Ground as league frontrunners, both know there’s still plenty of work to be done over the next few weeks to have any chance at an extended postseason run.

It gives Battle Ground something to build around, though. Mallory Meyer was strong in the circle, striking out six compared to just one walk and seven hits in the complete game. Those Tiger bats sure are fun, too.

Battle Ground tallied 10 hits, and even the outs were primarily hard line drives.

“We just adjusted well to that inside pitch,” said Tiger sophomore Alexis Laizure, who was 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBI. “We jumped on that and got on the board early.”

The Tigers (7-4, 3-0 4A GSHL) put up three runs in the first inning, as Emma Elliott doubled to left field and Grace Stillman pounded home a two-run single the same direction.

Skyview (6-4, 3-1) pulled to within one when Lauren Johnson and Mikelle Anthony picked up back-to-back RBI hits in the third inning. The Tigers made sure their sophomore pitcher didn’t have to fret too much when Laizure doubled to right field to score two and extend the lead to 5-2 in the third. Laizure added a bloop RBI single in the fifth and doubled down the third base line in the seventh before Jenna Bergren drove home the final run.

Stillman, a senior catcher, finished 2 for 4 with a double and two RBI.

“They knocked us out last year so it was great for us to get revenge,” Stillman said. “We’re sending a message early to the other teams in our league.”

The Tigers, who lost 7-4 to the Storm in last year’s bi-district playoffs, now sit perched atop the league with a couple more turns through the standings remaining.

“It’s huge for us,” Wiser said. “It’s a confidence booster. I told them not to get cocky, but to be confident from it. … We can’t get comfortable.”

Skyview is looking for some of that confidence after struggling at the plate at times on Tuesday. The Storm picked up seven hits, including two apiece from Mikelle Anthony, Averie Sievers and Maria Hyde.

“I thought Mallory did a really good job,” Kim Anthony said. “She just kept us off-balanced. Of all the pitchers, we’ve seen so far this year, she’s done the best job with that.” Anthony also saw her team compete. She saw a lot of fight from her pitcher, Addi Macpherson, who struck out three in six innings of work. As long as her Storm keep scrapping, Anthony figures it’ll be all right.

“Any day, anybody is going to beat anybody,” she said. “That’s why you show up to the ballpark: Because every day is a new day.”

The Storm begins its second run through the league on Wednesday against Heritage. Battle Ground is scheduled to finish a game with Camas on Thursday. The Tigers lead 3-1 through three inning in that one.

Luke Staton’s sacrifice fly with the bases loaded sent Union to a 4-3 win over Camas in 11 innings on Tuesday at Union High.

Staton’s one-out sac fly ended a game that saw eight pitchers combine for 22 strikeouts and 19 walks as each team managed just five hits.

Staton drove in a run on an error that tied the score 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth. No team would score again until the bottom of the 11th.

Spencer McGuire, Jordan Head and Michael Whitney allowed just three hits over six innings in relief for Union, which improved to 8-5 overall and 3-4 in the 4A Greater St. Helens League.

Riley Sinclair allowed three hits over six innings in relief for Camas (10-4, 5-2).

Stars of the day

• Makenzie Misner, Heritage softball, allowed six hits and walked none over eight innings in a 4-3 win over Union. Only one run was earned.

• Rachel Merrill, Camas girls tennis, won her top singles match 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) in a 6-0 team sweep of Battle Ground.

• Aquinnah Wiseman, La Center softball, went 3 for 7 with three runs, two RBI, two stolen bases and a triple in a doubleheader sweep of King’s Way Christian.

• Tyra Schroeder, King’s Way Christian softball, hit the first home run in program history as the Knights nearly overcame an eight-run deficit in an 8-7 loss to La Center.

• Mary Fogg, Mountain View softball, went 4 for 6 with five runs scored and five RBI in a league win over Hudson’s Bay.

• Abby Runyon, Hockinson softball, threw a complete-game four-hitter with nine strikeouts in a 2-0 extra-inning league win over R.A. Long.

McIntosh hired as girls basketball coach at Battle Ground

It’s a fresh start at a familiar place for Dave McIntosh.

McIntosh, Mountain View’s girls basketball coach the last three years, takes over Battle Ground’s girls basketball program, he said Wednesday.

McIntosh replaces Lisa May, who resigned last month.

While McIntosh is new to the Tigers’ program, he isn’t new to the school. He spent his first two years teaching at Battle Ground. McIntosh is in his fifth year teaching and third at Mountain View as a special education teacher. He views Battle Ground as a unique place that sets itself apart from Vancouver.

“I love the people up there,” he said. “When my wife and I weighed the pros and cons, it made sense.

“It’s a true town and a true community.”

Battle Ground went 5-15 last season and while it went winless in the 4A Greater St. League, McIntosh senses players are eager to get back in the gym.

“They’re hungry for success,” he said.

Woodland, Grey win softball showdown against Ridgefield

WOODLAND — Wednesday’s 2A Greater St. Helens League softball showdown between Ridgefield and Woodland was pegged as the pitchers’ duel of the season. Rightfully so.

Spudders’ ace Kaia Oliver is headed to Syracuse next season and Woodland hurler Olivia Grey is bound for Portland State.

“They’re the best two pitchers, maybe, in the state,” Woodland coach Tom Christensen said.

The two did not disappoint on Wednesday, combining for 24 strikeouts and four hits allowed in a brisk 67-minute affair.

Grey’s 16 strikeouts combined with three Ridgefield errors were enough to lift the Beavers (9-0, 3-0 2A GSHL) to a 4-0 victory.

“It really shows me what’s going to happen at the next level,” Grey said of the third ever meeting between the two Division I signees.

Grey has struck out 149 batters in 59 innings this season. She’s allowed 13 hits and zero earned runs. Yet, she’s constantly on the lookout for ways to improve.

“You can never be too good,” she said.

Grey was very good on Wednesday. She struck out the side to open the game, setting the stage for what was to come.

When she did allow baserunners — via two hits and two hit batters — her defense was there to pick up the slack. Kelly Sweyer came up with a heads-up double play on a popup bunt in the second inning to highlight the Beavers’ defense, which has avoided being lulled to sleep by Grey’s ability to send batters packing without their help.

“We do a lot of drills in practice and put a lot of pressure on them,” Christensen said. “I’ll make them do something over and over and over until we can’t get it wrong. I can tell it frustrates them at practice but I explain that the reason I’m doing this is so they can play when the pressure is on.”

Woodland’s one error Wednesday proved inconsequential. Ridgefield (6-3, 1-1) couldn’t say the same.

All four Woodland runs came unearned, as Payten Foster’s double in the second preceded a throwing error to open the scoring. The Beavers added three more on a pair of Spudder errors in the third.

Entering Wednesday’s game, Oliver had allowed just four earned runs and 18 hits through 35 innings this season. She ran her season total to 59 strikeouts and allowed just two hits — Foster’s double and a Carleigh Risley two-RBI single.

“Was it an important game? Yeah, it was kind of an important game,” Ridgefield coach Dusty Anchors said. “But when you take a step back and look at the big picture, it’s just one of 20 games. If you look at it properly, this one game makes you stronger for the rest of the season.”

After all, the Spudders will have to see Grey at least once more this season, if not twice or three times when all is said and done. Learning from Wednesday could prove the difference, as it did when the Spudders topped Woodland 4-3 in the second meeting last season. Anchors said his job is to make sure the girls don’t panic down the stretch, which starts with Mark Morris on Thursday in Longview.

Woodland, on the other hand, is feeling confident for another extended postseason run after taking home the 2A state title last season. The Beavers travel to R.A. Long on Thursday.

“I think before spring break we were just going through the motions and being a little lackadaisical,” Christensen said. “I think having more of a sense of urgency, that’s been a difference maker.”

Milton struck out seven and walked three as the Thunder improved to 13-0 overall and 9-0 in 3A Greater St. Helens League play.

Gavin Trono put Mountain View ahead with an RBI single in the top of the second. The Thunder added a run in the sixth when Riley McCarthy led off the inning with a double, then scored on a ground out.

Dezmon Warren and Connor Bice kept Evergreen close by holding Mountain View to five hits.

Seton Catholic boys soccer eyes postseason after 3-2 win

$

Seton Catholic’s boys soccer team already is looking ahead in its schedule.

By no means are the Cougars looking past their 1A Trico League opponents, but rather, looking ahead to the postseason.

That’s because for the first time in five seasons, the Cougars are on the cusp the playoffs following Thursday’s 3-2 home league win over La Center.

With three regular-season games remaining, Seton (10-1 overall, 8-1 league) can clinch a playoff berth as early as next Thursday against league-leader Toledo/Winlock. The top three teams advance to districts.

“League play is not where (the season) ends,” senior defender Josh Freitag said.

For the team’s four seniors — Freitag, Seth Moore, Blake Beckwith and Patrick Ryan — they’ve not only watched the program grow, but they’ve been instrumental in it.

In 11 games, Seton’s outscored opponents 58-13 and for the first time in program history, a junior varsity team was formed after 28 players turned out, second-year coach Amanda Chase said.

But that postseason mentality for the varsity is starting to take shape, and they get a taste of it daily.

“Every time we practice,” said Moore, who had a goal and an assist Thursday, “we practice to play in the postseason.”

Moore assisted younger brother, David Moore’s first-half goal that gave Seton a 2-0 halftime lead on the Wildcats. His goal in the 48th minute pushed the lead to 3-0.

Through 11 games, Seton’s outscored opponents 58-13 with three shutouts over its four games.

Sean Fox of La Center ended the three-game shutout streak with his goal in the 53rd minute, and Brendon Leach’s penalty kick made it 3-2 in the 76th.

First-year Wildcats coach Sanjay Prasad figured it’d be a rebuilding year for his program given the senior-laden team that reached state and played for the 1A District title in 2018.

“But we’re competing,” Prasad said. “We’re a young team and we still have opportunities … We’re outside as the second 4 (spot in league), but there’s still hope for us.”

Skyview baseball grinds out 12-2 win

BATTLE GROUND — The persistent chattering from the Skyview baseball dugout had a consistent message Thursday: Compete with a grinder’s mentality.

“That means taking every pitch one at a time,” senior Noah Guyette said. “We’re not getting too far ahead of ourselves. We’re just thinking about making a grind of every at-bat.”

Most emblematic of that sentiment, as he often is, was Ryan Pitts. The senior didn’t have his best stuff on the hill against Battle Ground, but he gritted out five innings, allowing just five hits and one earned run in the Storm’s 12-2 4A Greater St. Helens League win over the Tigers. He struck out six.

“He is the type of person that demonstrates that kind of mentality every day,” Skyview coach Seth Johnson said. “You could tell from the very first inning that he was kind of fighting himself. … But that’s what kids like him with his mentality can do when they don’t have their best stuff.”

Pitts got some help from his defense, too. As has been the case all season for the Storm (12-2, 6-1 4A GSHL), who haven’t allowed more than five runs to a Washington state school this season, the team excelled at making the routine plays.

Throw in a few spectacular ones, like Derek Lewis’ and Titus Oien’s smooth double play in the bottom of the third, and you have yourself a win.

That play, which had Lewis field a hard-hit grounder, step on second base and throw over to Oien, who scooped it out of the dirt, paved the way for the Storm’s fourth-inning breakout.

Skyview scored five runs in the following frame, including RBI singles from Micah Baylous and Michael Stromberg and a pair of bases-loaded walks.

“That double play was huge. It kind of springboarded us,” Johnson said. “The defense really gave us the energy and the momentum to feel good going into the top of the fourth.”

Until that point, Battle Ground senior Avery Fettig was dealing. He had three strikeouts in the opening three frames and held a deep Storm lineup at bay.

Two errors by the Tiger defense to start the inning put him in a hole he couldn’t climb out. Fettig was pulled before the inning finished, ending his day with 3.2 innings and three hits allowed.

“He’s made himself his own man in the offseason; he’s worked extremely hard,” Battle Ground coach Jeremy Hertner said. “It’s paid off for him on the mound. If we give him a little help, he was rolling pretty good.”

Skyview continued to take advantage of Battle Ground miscues the rest of the way. The Tigers (6-7, 3-4) finished with six errors and allowed nine walks.

The Storm took advantage with seven hits. Guyette had a two-RBI double to really open the floodgates in the fifth inning. He finished 2 for 4 with four RBI.

“I just stay relaxed up there and keep my mind fresh,” said Guyette, an Air Force Academy signee. “I just look for one pitch, honestly, when they’re struggling.”

Battle Ground totaled five hits, including an RBI bloop single in the fourth inning from Anakin Velasqez, who stole third and scored on a wild pitch later in the game.

Skyview and Battle Ground meet again on Monday, a 7 p.m. game under the lights at Propstra Stadium.

River’s Connop makes most of his shots

WOODLAND — For 79 minutes and 45 seconds, Woodland boys soccer made life difficult on Columbia River junior forward Jake Connop. What he did with the other 15 seconds was nothing short of brilliant.

On a lofted free kick from Julian Villa-Salas in the 69th minute, Connop saw his moment.

He rose into the air, found the ball and flicked his head toward the goal. The ball floated over the outstretched Treyson Thrall and slipped under the crossbar to ice the game in the Chieftains’ 2-0 2A Greater St. Helens League win Friday.

“Jake is very clinical,” River coach Filly Afenegus said. “He only needs one or two chances to bury it. I understand it was a little difficult for him to get in the game because they were keying on him … but that was great technique.”

The goal sealed the 34th win of Columbia River’s unbeaten streak and put the Chieftains (11-0-1, 8-0 2A GSHL) six points clear of the rest of the league with four games to play.

Maksum Yurichko slotted home a penalty kick after Ryan Brown was taken down in the penalty area in the 10th minute.

The Chieftains haven’t lost a game since May 16, 2017 — a 2-1 state defeat to Highline. They have yet to lose a league game since dropping down to 2A three years ago.

“We have a goal in mind,” Connop said. “We lost a lot of seniors so people don’t think we’re as good but we want to show them we are as good, and maybe even better. We’re going to try to get to state and win it.”

Woodland coach Bryan Vogel thinks the Chieftains have a good shot. His squad has given River a better fight than almost anybody this season. The reward has been 4-0 and 2-0 defeats, and six of the team’s seven allowed goals this season.

“River has the makings to be in that state title game again,” Vogel said. “So if we can go toe to toe with them, we can go toe to toe with anybody.”

It wasn’t a bad effort for the Beavers (8-2-2, 6-2), who found their legs and controlled the first 15 minutes of the second half Friday.

Aidan Thrall ripped a free kick in the 50th minute that nearly got by River keeper Miles Miranda, who finished with four saves in the shutout.

Jackson Finn’s bicycle kick shot on target in the 74th minute added another moment of excitement for a team the Chieftains expect to meet in the district championship again.

“Every time we play against them it’s hard,” Connop said. “But that’s what we need. We need a little bit of a challenge.”

The Chieftains will look to extend their unbeaten streak to 36 on Tuesday against R.A. Long. Woodland will recompose without star sophomore Jesse Thrall, who received his second red card of the season and will sit at least one game. The Beavers host Mark Morris on Thursday.
