Washougal senior Beyonce Bea was named the Associated Press’ Class 2A girls basketball player of the year Wednesday, as voted on by media members statewide.

Bea, a three-time 2A Greater St. Helens League MVP and program’s career scoring leader, led the Panthers to their first state title last month, capping a career that includes four league titles in addition to a district title this past season. The Idaho signee was a unanimous pick for 2A player of the year and also was a first-team all-state pick who averaged better than 17.5 points and 9.7 rebounds per game.

In the 2A state championship game in Yakima, Bea scored a game-high 30 points, including 12 of her team’s 14 overtime points, and grabbed 15 rebounds in a 49-40 overtime win over East Valley (Spokane).

Bea is one of seven Clark County players earn all-state honors. Prairie seniors Brooke Walling (first-team) and Cassidy Gardner (honorable mention) earned honors in Class 3A girls, and Union’s Ethan Smith is honorable mention for Class 4A boys. Walling, bound for Fresno State, earned 3A all-tournament MVP honors and Gardner (Portland State signee) led the Falcons in scoring, as both helped Prairie win its first state title since 2012. Smith, the 4A GSHL co-MVP, made 104 3-pointers leading the Titans back to the state tournament.

In 1A, La Center’s Hunter Ecklund (1A boys first-team), King’s Way Christian’s Khalfani Cason (1A boys honorable mention) and Taylor Stephens (1A girls first-team) earned all-state honors. Ecklund, a junior and Trico League MVP, led the Wildcats back to the 1A state tournament and Cason helped the Knights to their best state finish in program history (second place). Stephens, the Trico League’s co-MVP headed to Central Washington next season, became the girls basketball program’s career scoring leader this past season.

Gonzaga Prep’s Anton Watson and Kamiakin’s Oumou Toure were voted the all-classification boys and girls basketball players of the year.

Is there a competitive advantage for private schools? It depends

$

If there is an issue in high school sports that will surely spark heated opinions — other than transfers — it’s the issue of what to do about private schools.

It’s true that private schools operate under different rules than public schools. The question is whether those different rules amount to a competitive advantage, and if so, how much, and if so, what can be done about it.

In some states, private schools are put into their own competitive classification. But in Washington, there just aren’t enough private schools to warrant such a move.

Of the roughly 380 member schools in the WIAA, fewer than 70, or roughly 18 percent, are private schools.

In other states, private schools have their enrollment number enlarged by roughly 150 percent. So a private school with an enrollment of 300 would have its enrollment counted as 450.

But in Washington, 17 of the 29 private schools currently in Class 4A-1A already opt-up one classification — some opt-up two classifications.

Because of the two factors, Washington is one of many states that makes no provisions regarding private schools in its classification process.

And that brings us back to our original questions: Do private schools in the state of Washington have a competitive edge?

Mike Colbrese, the WIAA’s retiring executive director, said no when asked about private schools by a group in Bremerton last week.

“A lot of people don’t look at the facts,” Colbrese said regarding private schools. “Top to bottom, private schools don’t win that many more championships … I’ll be glad to send you the data. We’ve been collecting it for the past 15 years.”

That comment caught my attention, so I decided to take a closer look at the success rate of private schools in the state.

For starters, private schools don’t have a huge impact on the larger-school classifications. In Class 4A, there are only three privates schools. In 3A, there are six. And at 2A, one.

And of those 10 schools, nine opt-up at least one classification already.

But when you look at the small-school classifications, that’s where private schools make a bigger impact on the landscape.

In Classes 1A to 1B, private schools make up about 31 percent of all the schools in those three classes.

But do those private schools win more than 31 percent of the time?

For my research, I only went back two years. Going back any farther would go into the previous classification cycle which would complicate things.

But I also didn’t just look at state champions, but instead teams that enjoyed success at state.

To rate that, I considered teams that reached the state semifinals or placed in the top four at state, depending on sport.

So what was the success rate of private-school teams at state in the past two years in Classes 1A-1B? It was 29.9 percent.

So looking at those numbers, you can say Colbrese is right.

However, if you dig deeper, the numbers start telling a different story.

Look at Class 1B, made up of the smallest schools in the state. It has the greatest concentration of private schools — 43.5 percent of all schools.

But the success rate of those private schools is much lower — 23.4 percent.

Why is that? Well, many of these small private schools have specifically-designed curriculum — usually religiously based — and athletics aren’t a big part of that.

Also, many of these 1B schools only field teams in a few sports, like volleyball and basketball.

But when you look at Class 1A and 2B, the success rate of private schools climbs.

In those two classes, private schools represent 25 percent of all schools. Yet the success rate for those schools is 34.4 percent.

That may not be a huge difference. But when you break things down by sport, more disparity shows up.

In soccer (boys and girls), 1A/2B private schools had a 53 percent success rate, or 17 of 32 state semifinalists.

In volleyball, 8 of 16 semifinalists were private-school teams. Baseball had 7 of 16. Tennis was 9 of 16.

But in other sports, 1A/2B public schools dominated. Football saw 15 of 16 public-school state semifinalists. The same was true of softball (15 of 16 were public schools). All 16 top-4 boys wrestling teams were public schools.

Now, the WIAA doesn’t like to break things up by sport. It prefers to take things on the whole. And that can make solutions challenging.

And there is something else to consider. Most of the private schools that have enjoyed success at state reside in more populated areas on the west side of the state.

Being a small school that draws students from a heavily populated area is a distinct advantage.

So what is the solution? I don’t really know.

The issue is complex, and solution would also be complex.

And at this point, it doesn’t look like the WIAA is looking for one.

Bats come alive for Battle Ground softball in 4A GSHL opener

$

BATTLE GROUND — The recipe for success this spring for the Battle Ground softball team has been pretty simple. When the Tigers swing the bats well, they win.

The Tigers averaged nine runs in four non-league wins and only a little more than two in four losses.

So it came as a relief for coach Arielle Wiser when the Tigers pushed across four runs in the first inning of their 4A Greater St. Helens League opener against Union.

“We talked about that,” Wiser said. “People are always looking at the standings, looking at results to see what other teams are doing. So it’s nice to make a statement in our league opener.”

Brianna Adams and Grace Stillman led the way as the Tigers (5-4) rolled to a 10-0 win in five innings over the Titans on Tuesday.

Adams went 2 for 3 with three RBI and Stillman was 2 for 2 with two doubles, two runs and the game-ending RBI in the fifth, putting the 10-run rule into effect.

“It was very nice way to start league, solid start,” Adams said. “(The non-league season) has been pretty good, too. We’ve battled a lot, and we’re working together to get better.”

The two seniors have been playing big roles for the youthful Tigers this spring, Wiser said.

“With Grace being a senior behind the plate being the general for the whole field, that’s huge,” Wiser said. “She communicates well, loud, energetic. And then Bri at second, she’s just so solid, always gets the job done. And her bat has just been amazing this year, too. The leadership is awesome.”

On Tuesday, the Tigers got production throughout the lineup. Jennifer Westrand had two RBI and Mallory Meyer, Alexis Laizure and Kelly Monaghan added one each. Emma Elliott went 1 for 2 and scored three times.

“This has been one of our best seasons for bats, like one through nine,” Wiser said. “We don’t have hitters one through four and then it drops off. It’s through the whole lineup.”

And the Tigers also have better depth with pitching, Wiser said. On Tuesday, Meyer shined in the pitcher’s circle Tuesday as the sophomore shut out the Titans on three hits.

“She’s improved a lot since last year,” Wiser said. “She’s been keeping the ball down lower, and her movement has been a little bit better. And she’s grown.”

The Tigers hope to take another step in their growth on Wednesday when they play at Skyview, if the weather allows.

“Through our preseason, we’ve kind of had our ups and downs,” Wiser said. “But I feel like even in our practices, they’ve been meshing together, growing confidence and gelling together.”

Battle Ground scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning and then got out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom to hold off Camas 6-3 in a 4A Greater St. Helens baseball matchup Tuesday at Camas.

Down 3-2, the Tigers (5-5, 2-2 4A GSHL) tied the game on Brett Joner’s one-out single, and then took the lead on Tyson Lindemood’s hit.

A fielder’s choice brought home the third run, and bases-loaded walk scored the fourth run of the inning.

Camas (8-3, 3-1) loaded the bases on a single and two walks, but Battle Ground’s Sam Sutton struck out two batters and got the third out on an outfield fly.

The teams combined for nine errors resulting in just two earned runs. There were also 17 walks issued.

Clark, Cox lead Camas girls golf team to win at Chieftain Invite

BATTLE GROUND — The Camas girls golf team hit the road earlier this week in search of good golfing weather.

The Papermakers didn’t find it. Instead, they found something else — experience.

“It was a little rough of us,” senior Emma Cox said. “It’s a long drive out there, and we really weren’t ready for the conditions. It was windy … a lot more windy than it was today. But everyone took what they learned from Pasco and really wanted to do well today.”

Playing in 25 to 30 mile-an-hour winds, Camas placed second at the Pasco Invitational. Senior Ashley Clark shot a 76 and finished second.

In less wind, but a bit more drizzle Thursday at the Chieftain Invitational at Tri-Mountain, Clark set the pace, winning the event with an even-par 72.

“Ashley played really well today,” Camas coach Bob Foster said. “That’s a personal best for her on this course. And she missed a couple of birdie putts or it would have been even better.”

With Clark and Cox, who finished second with a 75, the Papermakers rolled to the team title with a score of 330. Skyview (394) was second followed by Mountain View (419).

“That was kind of disappointing, but it was OK,” Clark said of her missed putts. “I just got back up and stayed positive through it. … I knew the weather was going to be bad. But I also knew I had been practicing and working hard. So I just kind went out there and trusted my game.”

Maddy Starwalt of Skyview was third with an 81. She was followed by Kiana Coburn of Fort Vancouver (85), Liz Dolan of Kelso (88) and Samantha Fenton of Ridgefield (88).

Foster said playing a lot of golf this week was part of the plan coming out of spring break.

“We had JV match on Monday, another on Wednesday,” he said. “We were in Pasco on Tuesday and here today. That’s a lot of golf. But this is when we make our big push to get better heading toward district and state.”

Camas has a young squad with 19 golfers, and Foster has been rotating 11 different golfers through the varsity lineup to help them gain experience.

And playing in 18-hole tournaments like those in Pasco and Tri-Mountain also help.

“This was just the second time this season that we’ve played 18 holes,” Cox said. “So even though it wasn’t the best conditions, everybody has been really developing their games, or trying to at least in this weather. And I was just really proud how everybody battled it out there today.”

Columbia River’s Rhoads wins three events at Twilight meet

The real workout for Giovanna Rhoads wasn’t winning three events Friday at the John Ingram Twilight Meet.

In bouncing between the long jump, high jump and triple jump, the Columbia River senior covered plenty of ground.

“That’s kind of the joke of it,” Rhoads said. “I’m running between events the whole entire meet. … I’m getting a workout, for sure.”

Friday’s triple triumph at Columbia River High might be a warmup for the track season’s pinnacle. Rhoads might try to qualify for the state meet in four events, adding the 200 meters to three field events in which she has posted as least the second-best mark in Class 2A statewide this season.

It all comes in stride for an athlete who hates to sit still, even in practice.

“My coaches are like ‘take your time, rest for five minutes between drills,’ Rhoads said. “But I just can’t do it. I have to get them done. So it’s nice to be occupied the whole meet.”

Last season, Rhoads reached the state meet in two events, placing seventh in the high jump and 11th in the triple jump.

After an offseason of intense training, she’s well on her way to reaching state in three field events.

Friday, she won the high jump by clearing 5 feet, 4 inches, joining Woodland’s Nicolle Guthrie as the only 2A athletes to have cleared that height this season, according to Athletic.net.

Rhoads also leads all 2A athletes in the triple jump with a mark of 36 feet, 9 inches. Though she leapt 36-0 Friday, that mark still won by nearly four feet.

Rhoads won the long jump Friday in 16-5. Her personal best of 17-1 ranks No. 2 in 2A.

But Friday’s performance wasn’t as simple as stepping up to the jump runway or clearing the high jump bar.

As the long jump wound down, Rhoads sprinted down the length of the field to the high jump to see if the bar had reached a height she wanted to attempt.

As she and Seton Catholic’s Jerrica Pachl dueled in the high jump, Rhoads had a friend check on the status of the triple jump so she wouldn’t miss her jumps and be disqualified.

Rhoads and Pachl both cleared 5-foot-4 in the high jump. Though Pachl finished second due to more misses, her personal-best Friday is the highest so far in Class 1A statewide.

That high jump duel meant Rhoads missed her practice runs on triple jump. Not to worry, Rhoads had already done plenty of sprinting Friday.

Running also occupies a lot of her training.

“Jumping is definitely synonymous with sprinting,” she said. “You have to have to sprint mechanics to jump. Jumps come with power. You need quick muscle twitch.”

With workouts centering on sprinting drills and explosive speed, Rhoads hopes to put that to further use in the 200 meters, an event she’s tried once this season.

“My competitive side came out, so I want to get to state in it,” she said. “I’m going to try and do all four one meet before districts and see how it goes.”

Friday’s meet, which included nine teams from Southwest Washington, also saw two fast races by two Washougal distance runners.

Amelia Pullen clocked the second-fastest 2A time this season in the 3,200 meters. She won in a personal-best time of 10 minutes, 59.84 seconds in a race that included Hockinson’s Allyson Peterson (Fourth-best time in 2A) and Fort Vancouver’s Emily Phelps (sixth-best in 3A)

Pullen, who won the 2A state cross country championship in the fall, recently signed to run at Warner Pacific University in Portland. The senior’s time Friday was two seconds faster than her third-place finish at last year’s state meet.

Fellow Panther Gabriel Dinnell ran a personal best to win the 1,600 in 4:29.45, the second-fastest time this season in 2A. Dinnell already owns the fastest 2A time in the 3,200.

Columbia River sophomore Levi Williams became to first 2A athlete this season to clear 14 feet in the pole vault, winning on Friday by 18 inches.

Skyview’s Zach Maier won the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles, helping the Storm to the team championship. Skyview’s 142 points were 21 ahead of second-place Kelso.

Washougal won the girls team trophy with 122 points, three ahead of Seton Catholic. Aurora Espinoza-Chaney (100 meters) and Katie Stevens (pole vault) joined Pullen as individual winners.
